Practice.

Seriously, as someone who has two math degrees, the more you do it, the more you understand it. Do every problem in the book regardless of what level you're studying.

Drawings and diagrams in your notes are also very helpful. It's a pretty abstract field, so the more you can visualize what's going on the more you'll understand.

Yes. There's even an evolution thread there.

That's where all the serious discussion takes place, political or not.

Speaking from total ignorance here. Whats the big deal with an Admin just making another sub forum?

pro Scientific "Area"

pro staged alien invasion to dearm the american population (well, I'm rather pro the american people sensing the scam)

pro worldwide rock throwing at holografic UFOs! (Can they make the holograms as real as they'll "fight" back?)

As the poster who initially seconded your idea in the other thread...I am still in support of a science section.

Specifically with a direct link as the Political section has.

Yeah, but evolution is politically charged.

Something like the discovery of the Higgs Boson though isn't. It wouldn't make sense for that to be on the politics board.

We need to do this.

However, the one rule should be that if someone starts a post by saying "Being an electrical engineer..." then they're permabanned from the lounge. If the whole thread/section becomes a battle of who's more qualified or more intelligent then it will be the worst forum on the site. It has to be a discussion between interested people, no matter what they already know.

What threads would we make?

Really? If you think those are the only threads we can make in a Science forum then... I don't even know what to say.

Oh I wasn't asking skeptically. I'm curious. What other threads (not topics) would we have?

Honestly, I don't really see the point. There aren't that many science threads. One of the main reasons, I think, why you create another subforum is that talk on a certain subject is getting so common that separation is beneficial to both that talk and the rest of the talk in the original subforum. I don't see that being an issue. We've had no problem accommodating the few scientific threads that we've had.

Something to keep in mind is that creating one more subforum means one more subforum to check. One problem that you might have is that not many people will check a science subforum and, thus, will not contribute to its threads. When you have science threads in the Lounge, like we currently have, many more people contribute to them than would if they were in their own subforum.

On top of that, any threads that get into politics or areas of impassioned debate (ex. global warming, environmentalism, evolution, stem cells/abortion) will be closed and its contributors told to take it to the politics subforum, and any threads that get too close to computers, video games, gadgetry and smartphones will be moved to the Geek Emporium. What's left may be relatively dry topics that are all discussed by the same 10 people who are the only ones who are geeky enough about science to check the subforum frequently. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's my concern.

There are a lot of people out there who are unaware of the existence of the social sciences. Don't blame them for their ignorance.

This is true

Not enough activity to dedicate a science sub-forum, IMO. Everything is fine as is.

If such a forum is going to take place, then the politics and religion should be left out of the science discussion.

There's not enough activity because every thread where the OP is longer than 3 lines results in 'didnt read lol' gifs and other stupid ****.
