I'd like a food subforum. Those topics come up more than anything else it seems.

Food is about the only constant commonality between humans.

The point is, all these threads exist in the Lounge already. We have a "What are you eating" thread, We had a food thread that I made, and a food thread someone else made, and no one posts in them anymore. We have all the food articles that me, the food expert, takes so much time out of his busy day to post in the Useless Thread. We have all the science articles in the Lounge, which draw discussion without any problem at all. There's no need to reorganize any kind of structure right now.

As the lounge "mod", are you the only one who gets to decide this?

I'd be all for a science sub-section. Serious discussion wouldn't be tainted by the Lounge. There's also no place in the PF for Science talk. The two are not related in the slightest. There enough to talk about in the world of science that it could be an interesting sub-forum and maintain activity. I say go for it.

Are you like this because you don't want to see activity taken away from the lounge?

That's a fair point.

I'd like to say, though, that there are plenty of threads that I just don't bother with because I feel like they'll just clutter up the Lounge. And I like the Lounge the way it is.

It seems like the only people against it are the ones who would post stupid **** on the threads if they were posted here

New paper from Nature published by the National Institute of Aging, a NIH institute, on the effect of calorie restriction diet and longevity. It seems that these results contradict the thought that extreme calorie restriction increases longevity.

Over the years, both NIA and WNPRC have extensively documented beneficial health effects of CR in these two apparently parallel studies. The implications of the WNPRC findings were important as they extended CR findings beyond the laboratory rodent and to a long-lived primate. Our study suggests a separation between health effects, morbidity and mortality, and similar to what has been shown in rodents7, 8, 9, study design, husbandry and diet composition may strongly affect the life-prolonging effect of CR in a long-lived nonhuman primate.

Odds are you sometimes think about calories. They are among the most often counted things in the universe. When the calorie was originally conceived it was in the context of human work. More calories meant more capacity for work, more chemical fire with which to get the job done, coal in the human stove. Fat, it has been estimated, has nine calories per gram, whereas carbohydrates and proteins have just four; fiber is sometimes counted separately and gets awarded a piddling two. Every box of every food you have ever bought is labeled based on these estimates; too bad then that they are so often wrong.

A Food is Not a Food—Estimates of the number of calories in different kinds of foods measure the average number of calories we could get from those foods based only on the proportions of fat, carbohydrates, protein and sometimes fiber they contain (In essence, calories ingested minus calories egested). A variety of standard systems exist, all of which derive from the original developed by Wilbur Atwater more than a hundred years ago. They are all systems of averages. No food is average.

Differences exist even within a given kind of food. Take, for example, cooked vegetables. Cell walls in some plants are tougher to break down than those in others; nature, of course, varies in everything. If the plant material we eat has more of its cell walls broken down we get more calories from it. In some plants, cooking ruptures most cell walls; in others, such as cassava, cell walls hold strong and hoard their precious calories in such a way that many of them pass through our bodies intact.

Instead of just a "science" subforum, how about broadening it to something a little more encompassing, like technology, which would include science and everything else which would interest those in advancement?

Doesn't the geek emporium count as technology?

I guess you're right, but the Geek Emporium is all about video games and cell phones, which isn't really representative of science and technology in the big picture.

There's usually a thread involving science only like twice a year.
