People don't even bother posting anything even slightly intellectual here because they know the lounge-tards will derail the thread almost instantly.
Hasn't this always been the case though?
The Lounge was always about goofballs, even as far back as 2008. I remember when someone tried to talk seriously about a political topic, and it just got derailed by pictures of people throwing things at Bush. This was in 2008.
Besides, the hurricane thread is considered something slightly intellectual, as well as the "All Purpose" Lounge science thread, and the Mars Rover thread. There's no derailment there.
Of course. That's basically the point of the Lounge. People don't want to discuss anything serious here since it's supposed to be more of a laid back environment... and that's precisely why we want a separate sub-forum for science related discussions.
For those who wish to have a science forum, I'd suggest posting a variety of interesting science related stuff on the board. Prove that there is enough demand by enough posters.
Sure, those threads might get derailed in typical lounge style...but then show that there are enough posters who are trying to respond seriously to the topic (ignoring the derailment).
Show (as opposed to say) that there is enough interest to support a board.
I will look through some interesting stuff this weekend. The Mars thread and the Aliens plans thread (which has derived into a debate of how would life be outside of our planet... certainly not by my fault !) are great so far.
In any case, a science subforum won't be created on the basis of science threads becoming derailed in The Lounge. It will be created on the basis of science threads flooding The Lounge.
And if a science subforum will be created, expect plenty of people to post stupid things. Such is life on a science subforum that may or may not be a subforum of the general off-topic subforum of a hockey forum, which itself is a secondary element of a hockey prospects website.
