Bobby Ryan vs James Neal

Who is the better player? Both have similar contracts and both ride shotgun to great players. Who is better?

Idk, I think both are overrated, and I'm a Ducks fan.

As you said they both ride shotgun. Neal plays with Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Kunitz, and Iginla on his PP and at ES. Ryan has good linemates too, but not quite as good. Neal scores more goals and more points.

I don't think either of them are stars....I'd take Neal.

Bobby Ryan is the better player IMO. Both ride shotgun but I think Bobby Ryan would be the better player on a team where he was the best forward as opposed to Neal.

People are giving Malkin too much credit for Neal's success.

Yes, Malkin has helped Neal greatly, but without Malkin, Neal would still be a 30 goal scorer (rather than a 40 goal scorer).

Voted Neal.

Neal's never been a 30 goal scorer. High 20's or low 40's. I count 30G scorer when you finish season with 30-39 goals.

As for the poll? Ryan, no question.

Pens fan voting for Ryan. Neal is the definition of a complementary player, Ryan can definitely create offense on his own.

Ryan easily, out them both with the same center and Ryan will produce more.

I think Ryan can create more on his own. he has played a lot without Getz/Perry, and has been shafted to the 2nd PP unit due to Selanne, yet still puts up good numbers.

Ryan can actually create offense for himself, so him.

Also, he isn't a dirtball.

I love Neal, but Ryan is better. Very similar players IMO, but I think Ryan has hands where Neal has a hair trigger on his shot.

I feel the same way... but I'd take Ryan.

Close. Both solid first line players that fill similar roles. But they're not superstars by any means.

Ryan for me.

He's shown that he can be an elite goal scorer riding shotgun to great linemates, as has Neal. But Ryan has also shown to an extent that he can create offense for himself, away from those world class linemates. And i think in conjunction with that, Ryan has a more well-rounded skillset overall. Not just a shooter, but a guy who can generate offense outside of that at a higher level than Neal as well.

Considering both of their jobs is scoring goals, give me the guy that's cracked 40.

I find the riding shotgun thing a lame argument. I guess Hull just rode shotgun to Oates for his monster seasons in St. Louis? (Not comparing either guy to Hull, but it's the same premise)

Not really the same premis at all. For one, Hull was arguable the better player of the two but certainly in the same realm, he had put up big numbers both before and after playing with Oates (top 30 in his 2nd year, 19th and 11th the 2 years after Oates left), and outpaced Oates 2 of the 3 years they played together. Neal has not done any of that.

More importantly, not only does Neal ride shotgun to Malkin, but on the Powerplay he rides shotgun to Malkin and Crosby. That would be like Hull having Oates and Francis.

I think it's a fair assumption that Ryan could crack 40 goals with Malkin and Crosby feeding him on the powerplay if he were getting the 4 mins of PP toi per game that Neal has enjoyed in Pittsburgh instead of 2.

Bobby Ryan. Perennial 30 goal scorer without a Malkin caliber player. Ryan also has better puck handling abilities

James Neal for me. Surprised it's this lopsided in Ryan's favour.
