Honestly, this just goes to show that you really don't know anything about Kyle Turris.
He was by far the best defensive center on our team and his defensive play was MUCH better than his offensive play.
Being the best defensive center on the Senators doesn't make Kyle Turris a great defensive center. Ottawa gave up the most goals for a playoff team and usually good defensive centers also play a significant amount on the PK, something Turris doesn't do at all.
For example, Grabovski faces good competition and is sound defensively as a center but I wouldn't say he's being paid 5.5M for his defense or compare his defense to specialists like Plekanec etc.
Same way, Turris may be good defensively, but he isn't being given a 17.5M contract to play good defense and put up 30 points a season. That would be an overpayment.
JvR and Turris are very similar. Turris couldn't get going in Phoenix, got traded to Ottawa who had a surplus of D and could afford to lose Rundblad because they needed a young #2C behind Spezza.
I've no doubt that he'll be better than what he was in Phoenix.
Same way, JvR was on a team that was stacked and had guys like Gagne, Giroux, Richards, Carter, Lupul, Simmonds, Briere over the years and had moments where he showed his potential and was signed quickly after his good showing in the playoffs against the Bruins. He got injured in 2011 because of blocking a shot, Flyers needed D, Leafs needed size and so the trade was made..
JvR being "expendable" as somebody wrote earlier doesn't matter. Turris was traded for too that too for Rundblad who had all the Sens fans very excited.
Turris vs JvR:
Contracts: Dead even. If they progress and do well in a new environment, it's a steal. If not it's overpayment.
So far in the NHL: JvR has been better
I don't see how contracts have anything to do with the original poll question.
The question is, who is the better overall player? Not "who would you rather have?" or "who would you rather have in the future?", or "who will put up more points?"

Not a bad post, although I will say that by the time Turris joined the Senators, Ottawa wasn't giving up as many goals as they were when MacLean had first arrived and was implementing his new system (to the tune of 30 goals allowed in the first 6 games of the season).
He was a defensively responsible player but I agree that he's no defensive specialist. Few NHLers are, early in their careers.

I agree with most of your points, except when you hinted towards the fact that Turris isn't a great defensive center.
He is. I really challenge you to go watch tapes if you have the time, he shuts down opposition players down extremely well. With his drastic improvement in the gym this season, I'll take Turris.

JVR. Turris isn't even that good and I can't forget that JVR dominant performance in the playoffs. Turris got a bigger role with the Sens last season and will continue to have a large role and JVR will get that opportunity with the leafs this year.

When was jvr dominant in playoffs?
when he had 3 goals in 21 games or when he had 0 goals in 11?

You expected people in this place to actually read the OP?
JVR has the ability to dominate the game and he the best player on the ice at any given moment against any given player. Turris doesn't have that factor. Albeit it is fewer and further between. JVR has shown a lot more dominance in his young career than Turris has in his. The way i see it, Both players have identical floors, while JVR has a much higher ceiling. JVR quite easily.
