Hey guys, curious have you heard any updates on Matt Martin. Wang has historically not allowed players to play if they do not sign by the beginning of training camp (Bailey barely made the cut the past year I believe). Curious if the changing CBA will change anything for Matt Martin (IE: If he doesn't aign by the 15th will the Islanders straight out refuse to sign him?) and should they still expect a contract by the 15th?

According to a recent round table discussion, held by NYI beat writers, Martin and the isles are expected to sign a multi yr deal. He wants to stay and the isles want to keep him. I'm not sure if they are waiting for the current cba to be signed. With the possibility of rollbacks, it could be Martin's reps saying let's hold off on the extension, wait until the new cba is signed.
E. Kane is not signed. P.K. Subban is not signed. Are the Jets and Habs going to refuse to sign those rfa?
BTW, Wang did not tell his gm to walk away from rfas, who refused to sign by the opening of training camp. He told them to be in camp and signed if they wanted to play that season. Isles did not walk away from those rfas or deal them because they refused to sign. What a fantasy suggestion.
If you consider the owners' first proposal supposedly got rid of arbitration and a bunch of other impacts to early career players, perhaps they're just waiting to see what the new environment for players in those situations is post-new CBA.
TBH, I actually forgot Martin still wasn't signed. Weird.
But to answer your Q, I think in this case, there is an exception to be made. Hell, I bet they have a deal in place but are just waiting on more CBA news.
Honestly Martin doesn't have a lot of leverage going into the season. He had a very good year-there's no question about that. But with the CBA situation, Martin really needs to resign ASAP. He might get a pass on Wang's rule-but we'll see.

I'm kind of disappointed that Snow and Martin's rep, couldn't get a 4-5 yr extension done.
Martin's not the type of player you lock up foor 4-5 years. I wouldn't mind, but Martin most likely wants more than his value (and who can blame him). But any long-term contract for a 3rd liner-even a very good 3rd liner-HAS to be for the right price (like Nielsen's extension was years ago).
As I always do during the summer, and will continue to do so during the lockout, I watch old games. I love Martin, he really is the only physical player up front and is the best hitter in the game. I was watching game 4 of the Islanders-Leafs playoff game (how sad...) and watching Steve Webb tear it up with illegal hits and getting the crowd pumped was incredible, I hope to see Martin do that soon.

Hearing RFA Matt Martin and NYI will reach agreement on new contract before CBA expires at 11:59 p.m., when lockout commences.
So Martin got the same type of deal AMac and Frans did when thier ELCs expired. Less money but longer term and makes perfect sense for team and player alike.
