Wow...the refs just called a forward pass a fumble, giving South Dakota the ball when the Griz were in field goal range.

Wow.

Huge defensive stand and the Griz get the ball back.

And damn Appalachian State for having next week's game be a late afternoon game...I'm going to miss the 2nd half at work.

What I learned today...Montana's linebackers and offensive line are going to be as good as anyone in the FCS and the running game will definitely be the key. We have two freshman QBs who have talent (McKinney was 26-32 with 2 TDs today), but the key is two senior running backs with wildly different styles and an explosive sophomore...throw in that both QBs are mobile kids and the Griz will be putting up huge running numbers for a team that still throws the ball (Moore and Nguyen had 250 yards combined themselves today). Montana also has a frosh punter who can absolutely murder the ball...didn't get to see the new kicker outside of a couple extra point attempts (can't blame him for the block since 3 Coyotes got to the backfield on the snap).

The game was more dominant than the score would show (568-233 yard difference and 36-24 ToP), but there was some definite rust. It'll be interesting to see how the passing game responds to a more traditional defense. South Dakota was dropping everyone back all day giving up the short passes...which was confusing to say the least given Montana's running game and inexperience at the QB and WR positions.

Tennessee-Martin beats Memphis 20-17 to remind football fans that yes, Tennessee-Martin exists.

My submitted Top 25 for the week...keep in mind that I tend to greatly reward teams for FBS wins, but have a short memory of those if they can't keep it up for long. A pre-season Top 25 at this level is even more useless than at the FBS level and I'm not afraid to move teams around drastically early on.

#1 North Dakota State Bison
#2 Sam Houston State Bearkats
#3 Montana State Bobcats
#4 Eastern Washington Eagles
#5 Georgia Southern Eagles
#6 Montana Grizzlies
#7 James Madison Dukes
#8 Appalachian State Mountaineers
#9 Northern Iowa Panthers
#10 Old Dominion Monarchs
#11 Youngstown State Penguins
#12 Wofford Terriers
#13 New Hampshire Wildcats
#14 Towson Tigers
#15 Stony Brook Seawolves
#16 Illinois State Redbirds
#17 Central Arkansas Bears
#18 Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks
#19 Indiana State Sycamores
#20 Jacksonville State Gamecocks
#21 Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens
#22 McNeese State Cowboys
#23 William & Mary Tribe
#24 Liberty Flames
#25 Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks

If it were North Dakota State I'd bet money on the Bison winning. Minnesota is still Minnesota...they have a bit more talent than they have the past couple years, but that's not saying anything. New Hampshire should be able to hang with them and possibly pull it off.

I'm guessing Minny will pull it off, now if it were against my Bison that would be a different story. Hopefully we can play well tomorrow @ Colorado State.

Early safety for Minnesota after a UNH punt's snap went over the punter's head. 2-0 Gophers.

wow UNH is playing like crap, free kick after the safety results in a short field and a score. UNH got it back, but Minnesota has taken control. Another turnover resulted in a short field (18 yards) and a score. UNH down 30-7 at the half and has handed Minnesota 16 points.

Rhode Island football has been a walking joke for the bulk of it's existence, but they may be reaching a new low here.

They're losing 38-3 to Monmouth midway through the 3rd quarter and are losing the yards battle 448-128.

Monmouth is an NEC bottom-feeder with half the scholarships that Rhody has.

Delaware/Delaware State is on NBCSN. The vaunted 'Route 1 Rivalry.' And for you east coast people, that's not even US 1, that's DE State Route 1.

Stony Brook defeats Division-II Pace 77-7. The saddest part as a Seawolves fan, I thought their punter was better than ours.

The only way anyone beats North Dakota State this year is if they just fail to show up, like last year with Youngstown State. They're just too balanced and too good.

I worked through the Montana-App. State game and had the damn thing spoiled for me so I'm not a happy camper...though maybe my blood pressure is better off for not watching such a mistake-laden game from my Griz. Still, it came down to the last few seconds on the road with half the team being freshman...so it's hard to complain. Montana probably isn't going to go too far this year unless the running backs will them to victory...and Dan Moore sure as hell has the stats to show him doing that today, but that still wasn't enough.

And we have our first real FCS upset of the season as The Citadel beats #3 Georgia Southern 23-21.

If Moore was the one who ran through the entire Appalachian defense on the way to the endzone, he's going to be a good one. He was by far the best Montana player on the field. The QB was pretty elusive too, but some of his throws weren't great.

Jamal Jackson looked a lot better than last week. I was never really a DP fan so it's nice to have a steady QB back there again. He's even bigger than Edwards and I think Richie Williams. I don't cringe every time he takes a hit. New WRs looked very good as well.

Also glad the game wasn't decided on that late extra point. That would have cheapened things a bit. Though with as rowdy as the crowd was, we probably wouldn't have cared. It was probably the best crowd I've seen in awhile. And to top it off, our group of 20-25ish supposedly got on TV (well, ESPN 3) 3-4 times. Wouldn't be the first time, but it's always fun when it happens.

Glad The Citadel beat Georgia Southern, too, beyond the obvious 0-1 SoCon start for the Eagles. I'm sure our coaches took note and will have them prepared for Saturday at The Rock. I don't think Citadel is legit enough for 2 huge upsets in consecutive weeks, but I also thought the Panthers were an absolute lock to beat the Bucs.

Yeah, Moore was the one with the huge play. He's got nearly 400 yards of offense between the two games now...not bad for an old fashioned fullback...especially considering he only had about 500 yards all of last season.

There's going to be growing pains with the QB. The top two kids on the depth chart are both redshirt freshman (including the Stanford transfer). After them we've got a couple local kids who aren't really threats to play in anything more significant than garbage time.

The Sports Network FCS Top-25 College Football Poll
Team (First-place votes) Record Points Previous Rank
1. North Dakota State Bison (94) 2-0 3,946 2
2. Sam Houston State Bearkats (61) 1-0 3,897 1
3. Montana State Bobcats (1) 2-0 3,485 4
4. James Madison Dukes (1) 2-0 3,398 5
5. Youngstown State Penguins (4) 2-0 3,367 6
6. Old Dominion Monarchs 2-0 3,037 7
7. Northern Iowa Panthers 1-1 2,884 8
8. Appalachian State Mountaineers 1-1 2,796 11
9. Wofford Terriers 2-0 2,554 10
10. Eastern Washington Eagles 1-1 2,431 9
11. Georgia Southern Eagles 1-1 2,201 3
12. Towson Tigers 0-1 1,987 13
13. Delaware Blue Hens 2-0 1,900 15
14. Montana Grizzlies 1-1 1,756 12

Not really sure how Towson gets to move up while losing while we're dropped a couple spots...but that's the TSN poll for you.

If Montana loses to Jerry Falwell's boys today I'm going to be livid.

No real surprises so far today, but William & Mary @ Towson is on NBCSN and is tied 10-10 in the 3rd quarter.
