does the AHL still have the top 5 teams in each division make the playoffs? or did they change the rules this year? thanks in advance.

thanks...i guess the top 5 theory didn't work out for the league? my understanding is that they wanted as many teams to experience a taste of the playoffs as possible, using the best-of-3 with the 4th and 5th seeds in each division. i liked the idea- allowing as many young kids as possible to see the postseason. any idea why they punted it?

Because it was the stupidest thing ever, and all AHL fans knew it.

It couldn't be as stupid as the best-of-3 Calder Cup Semi-final round (to go from 3 teams to 2 after 2 prior rounds) 10 years ago.

The Barons had to play a Q-series last year, one that involved a couple of overtime contests, with one being in double OT. The Barons were then spent for the quarters vs. Hamilton. That's why they removed it. Not only was it ridiculous, it also gave the qualifying team no shot in later rounds.
