HFBoards Top 30 Centers - #4

Going into the 2012-2013 season, lets make a HFBoards list of the top 30 centers in the NHL. Try not to take potential or the future into consideration. You can however, take into consideration the possible improvement/regressing players might've done this off-season if you're sure about it.

Also, name your player you want to add for the next poll.

#1 - Sidney Crosby His concussion problems seems to be in the past. Still the best center (and player) in the world.
#2 - Evgeni Malkin Clear number 2. His last season was, again, a proof how dominating he can be.
#3 - Steven Stamkos The best goal scorer in the game right now. Had astonishing 60 goals last season.

Gonna go with Datsyuk.

Sorry for the quick first polls but they all had a clear winner right from the start. This is where it starts to get interesting.

Went with Giroux.

I'd add Patrik Elias to the next poll.

I thought about it but hasnt Elias been mainly winger during his career? And he will very likely be on the wing next season with Zajac and Henrique centering the 2 top lines.

For some reason I went with Kopitar, I missed Giroux completely...oops. Put one more down for Giroux and one less for Kopi.

Toews for me, probably the best 2-way player in the league

Meh, what-have-you-done for me attitude. Giroux would have to put up similar numbers next year before I put him in the top-5. Plus Sedin, Datsyuk, and Toews were all in the Western Conference, where for whatever reason scoring was abysmal.

Since the 2010 playoffs, Giroux has put up 219 points in 203 games (88 point pace).

He also put up 22 points in 17 games (106 point pace) against western conference opponents last season. Small sample size, so it doesnt mean much other than that Giroux's production certainly did not drop when playing against the west.

The NHL's biggest offensive threats last season (Malkin, Stamkos, Giroux) were simply on eastern teams. I think you'd have a tough time arguing that they were the NHL's top offensive threats because they played in the east or that they wouldnt have been 1, 2, and 3 if they were in the west. The gap is too wide to make that argument. Besides, the east's next biggest scorers (Kessel, Kovalchuk, Spezza, Tavares) were right in line with the west's biggest scorers (Thornton, Sedin, Eberle, Whitney). You'd have a much easier time arguing that those players are more comparable to each other than they are to Malkin, Stamkos, and Giroux as far as offensive production goes.

Picked Giroux by accident. Meant to pick Datsyuk.

Unless this is a "who would you choose to add to your team for now and the future" poll, in which case a guy like Giroux or Tavares would make more sense. But as far as right here and now goes, it's gotta be Datsyuk.

Guy's been doing it for years. One of the best all-around centers to ever play the game.

As much as it pains me to do so, I voted Giroux. He followed up an amazing regular season with a fantastic first round of the playoffs. The previous year, he lead his team in scoring, ahead of players like Carter, Richards, and Briere. I think he's on the verge of a 100 point season.

He came in as a Center then swithed to wing in 2003 I think and in the playoffs he was a Center so he split his career Wing and Center

You are forgetting a guy named Datsyuk...

Just realized...has there been a recent surge of Toews fans because this is the second post I saw about how Toews is an amazing two-way player which he is no doubt but after that "PeterForsberg" thread... that's all I can think of when someone mentions Toews.
