Joe LaBate and the Badgers are playing against the US U-18 Team right now. LaBate is playing as the 4th line and 2nd PP Unit Leftwing. He has 1 assist and has looked good with his team leading 2-0 after the 1st.

LaBate just made a great effort in fighting through 3 guys controlling the puck, managing to poke the puck to his teammate from his knees at the end. He's shown great puck control so far.

any reason hes playing on the 4th line and playing as a winger? IIRC he was there 2nd line center last year

He was 2nd line LW last year, traditionally a Center though.

He also has another assist on Wisconsin's 4th goal.

Last season he only played less than a handful of games at center and that was as 3C. The majority of the time he was 2nd line LW, but was shuffled up to the 1st line for a month or so. Eaves does not like starting rookies at C because of the defensive responsibilities he demands of them, which is why Kerdiles will likely start on Zengrele's wing or someone's wing.

Can't see him on the 4th line being a permanent thing. I wouldn't worry, the season hasnt started yet.

Yup, the announcers also made comments about Wisconsin's depth, saying that that 4th line would be a 3rd or 2nd on any other team.

ahh my mistake that makes sense hopefully he can eventually transition into a center to help out our center depth, dont see too many of our current center prospects having 1st or 2nd line potential in the future other than Schroeder and maybe Gaunce

Good night for the kids - excited to see LaBate back in action, I suspect he is going to have a big year.

Jermey Price and Ben Hutton also played today. I wonder how it went..
(@TysonGiuriato
#Canucks prospect @bhutt10 made his #NCAA debut tonight with @MaineIceHockey - finished with 1 shot and E +/-, in 2-1 loss to Quinnipiac)

Price was pointless and a +1 in a 1-0 win over Queen's.
Hutton was pointless and even in a 2-1 loss against Quinnipac.

Tomorrow BU (Myron) plays against U of T, and Maine (Hutton) plays against New Brunswick in another exhibition game.

edit: according to eliteprospects Myron is still injured, any truth to this?

If his season ends in March and the lockout is still going on, will Jensen be able to join the AHL still?

Anyone think it's just a matter of time before Myles Bell is signed to a contract? I know the entire "character" issue but he's putting up disgusting numbers again this year and playing for character franchise like Kelowna, I feel it's just a matter of time. I would not be against him receiving a contract from us.

For those who are wondering he has 5 goals and 6 assists in 7 games, to go with his 41 pts in 54 games last year.

Isn't he draft eligible again this year? I believe it's too late to sign him to a contract now.

Labate, btw, ended up with 2 assists against the U.S U-18 team.

Finally feels like hockey's started for real, what with all the prospect updates!

I think he still might be a wait and see guy, just because he's changed positions now (playing wing on a line with Sissons). Bell has some great offensive skills no doubt about that, and aside from that terrible accident, his main question marks were always that he was somewhere between mediocre and terrible in his own end. Probably a great move for his future moving to forward.

The player i've seen that imo should be at the top of the list of undrafted guys who will get signed is JC Lipon in Kamloops. I would consider either of those guys great signings if Gillis found room to do so, but they play in the dub so there's no chance that we sign them I guess. Kind of bizarre that they've signed 2 guys from the whl and they were Tochkin and Schneider

I used to wonder about that myself, but we signed Mceneny who was passed over for his first draft eligibility just in June. I guess every player who goes undrafted is signable. Bell's teammate with Kelowna, Carter Rigby, would be a decent pickup for somebody as well.

From what I remember, you can sign players who has attended development camp at your team, until a certain date. After which he can't be signed anymore and will re-enter the draft the next year.

It's either October 1 or the first day of the regular season, can't remember which - either way, it's geared so you can sign undrafted underage guys through the offseason and through training camp but not after.

He had a pretty impressive rookie campaign, and it seems like U of Wisconsin likes to roll their lines, so I wouldn't be too concerned about where he starts. He had a strong showing in their exhibition match the other day to boot.

Ya and that Wisconsin system seems like a factory. Can anyone tell me how Mallet has played or are there any quotes about his play? I heard something like he was the most noticeable player in his first exhibition game?
