#CBJ officially announce the waiver claim of LW Colton Gillies from the #mnwild.

Gillies certainly has the potential to become a power forward in the NHL. However, he still needs to make significant improvements in his game if he ever hopes to reach that plateau. He is a hard hitter, and plays with a definite mean streak. He still needs to improve on his scoring touch and defensive play.
Minnesota tried to sneak him through waivers to get him back to Houston for more playing time. It didn't work. I like this claim. Play him here for the rest of the season and see if he's a keeper.

I like the claim. NOthing to lose really. Sounds like his hockey sense is very weak but nothing could be as bad as Brule right?

Size and speed with a good forecheck is a good thing. Based on what Russo has written (Minny Beat Writer) it sounds like he is doing too much and making bad mistakes (like pass rather than shoot when in a prime slot). There is upside here and he's cheap and young. Can't teach size and when that comes with speed and a supposed good forecheck....

I like this waiver pickup

Gotta think Coach Richards knows something here.

Not sure how much offensive upside this guy has, but he's go size to be sure. Seems like a pretty good waiver wire pickup.

It will be interesting to see what we have here.

Looks like he's become somewhat of a whipping boy amongst some of the Minny fans:

Could be interesting, allows some flexibility in the bottom six and allows us to send someone back to Springfield. I would have preferred they claim Cal O'Reilly from Phoenix as he is an RFA at the end of this season instead of next season like Gillies and he has a lot more offensive upside.

Colton Gillies? Why do they keep claiming pluggers off waivers?

At first, I read Trevor Gillies and thought "Why?"

Then I read "Colton" & was like "Ok, this could be interesting."

This could also be Pahlssons temp. replacement.

I see this as more of the Dane Byers replacement. At least in the short term.

I like it, doesn't cost us anything asset-wise, so that's good.

Colton Gillies

Call me a WHL homer, but I really thought Colton Gillies had solid third line potential. Really, I haven't been proven too wrong on that yet, as he does still seem like that's his ceiling. Gillies is a big guy, could use some work on his foot speed, but has a solid frame, a big shot, and generally is a hard worker. He should remind some of you of Boone Jenner; he has similar upside as a penalty killer/role player.

Should be a good guy to have around. I'm excited to see him in Columbus, I was always a big fan of his when he played in Saskatoon.

From the HockeyBuzz Nucks blogger:

"Yesterday morning the Wild put local kid, Colton Gillies on waivers so they could send him to the AHL to get some confidence back. I would grab Gillies in a second, and it's not just because he's a local kid. I was a fan of the kid in 07 at the draft because he has all the tools to be a very solid NHL player. I doubt he'll ever be anything more than a 15-20 goal guy at the NHL level, but he has outstanding work ethic, great size, is willing to finish every hit, and he can fight a bit.

In my opinion, Gillies would be an upgrade on Weise and Duco for the fourth line energy role because he's bigger than Duco and tougher than Weise. Gillies is also a pretty decent penalty killer and is a better option than both Weise or Duco in that role. Add to that, Gillies only comes with a 625,000 cap hit for this year and next and you have a perfect player to as Mike Gillis said, "balance the roster"."

Don't know much about the kid, but if someone who watches the Canucks regularly thinks he could help them, I'm willing to believe he'll help us!

I hope he does well for you. He won't fight and has 3 goals in his career so not sure why he would all the sudden put up 15-20 a year.

He won't but I'm sure we will slot him into the top 6. He'll score a few goals and look really good playing with talent currently on the roster. Then he'll get a ridiculous extension

Typical Howson move.

That was my exact thought on the pickup.

I know from nothing, but this doesn't seem like a major deal; a guy in his 4th year who can't make the big team-Mayorov II?. I guess we'll see.

Howson needs to pad the roster in preparation for his "Don't Fire Sale" coming at the trade deadline.

"Wholesale change at wholesale prices"

Makes perfect sense.

Gillies is a complete bust as a first rounder. Yet another example of how the draft is no panacea. If it weren't for his drafting position, he'd be a middle tier AHLer probably looking for work in Europe next season.

His value to the Jackets lies completely under the surface. Perhaps Richards knows something no one else knows. I doubt it.

This answered my initial reaction after seeing his size. I thought maybe he would bring enough grit to be a replacement for Boll or Dors, that we would offload either of them via trade.
