As an Islanders fan why the hell would Tampa do this?
The main problem with Dipietro is a owner has to pay him and I assume Tampa is not a big spending team like Philly or NYR that can just dump a guy in the minors.
As for Tampa, I know Vinny's salary reduces his worth but I don't think he is salary dump worthy yet(he is still good for 70+ points)
This is brutal for the Lightning....Vinny is still a very good, overpaid, but very good player...Dipietro is just horrible....Bailey does not even come close to making up that difference.
RD's been able to play a total of 47 games, over the last 4 seasons.
Going into last season he was saying he felt great, better then he had in yrs. He played 8 games.
It's become clear to everyone but DiPietro, that his body can't hold up. I'd rather wait it out, let him face the truth and retire. Insurance will pay the bulk of his remaining $40m and the team will pay the rest.
And zero interest in Garon. Isles have Nabakov/Poulin/Nilson/Koskinen.
Isles can't afford to pay VL $8.5m -$10m in actual salary for the next 4 yrs and and imo they wouldn't want to.
This trade is stupid for both teams. I still think Vinny could put up 65-70 points in the right situation and I don't even think Charlie Sheen could get anyone coked up enough to trade for DiPietro.

I feel bad for all the "regular" Islanders posters who have to take heat for this debacle of a proposal by one of their own who probably had one too many wobbly pops and did the internet equivalent of "drunk dialing".

The OP is not from an NYI fan.
No idea which team he follows, but he's never posted on the NYI boards.

Fair point. I just assumed it must have been from an Islanders fan, based on how skewed the deal is.

Yeah, I don't think DiPietro's career is salvageable at this point, either. He's #1 on my list of biggest 1st overall busts of all time (though it's unfortunately due to health reasons, as opposed to Patrik Stefan-levels of suckyness).
Even if the guy can stay healthy, he's missed so much hockey (and the training that goes along with it) due to injury in his prime developmental years that I don't think there's any way he can even get back to where he once was, let alone where he was projected to get to as a kid.
Though, to your 2nd point, did the Isles take out an extended insurance policy on DiPietro's contract? I know that the NHL will only guarantee the first 7 years of a player's deal in the event of injury. Hopefully Wang had the foresight not to skimp on what seems to be the one life-preserver the Islanders have in the whole DiPietro contract mess.

Most NYI fans expect DiPietro will either retire or be bought out.

Yeah, it's too bad because the kid bleeds the isles colors.

Not even when the contract was first signed, have the isles or DiPietro spoken about his contract or insurance, except to say they were pushing the signing off for 1 yr to find a longer insurance policy.
Worst case scenerio:Isles pay DiPietro $1.5m per in a buyout.
Isles paying RD's buyout and paying a 1st liner in his prime $5m per, would still be a better bargain then paying VL $10m per.
no way this deal would be made because Vinny can still put up points and Garon is the safer goalie while the islanders would probably hope that Bailey becomes that reliable player for their playoff push
