It's going to come down to the pitching, and whether the players can throw to first base. We've seen what this team can do when they pitch well and throw to first base. We've also seen what happens when they don't pitch well and/or can't throw to first base.

Glad to see the Angels get eliminated. Unfortunately, the Tigers aren't all that great against the other playoff teams either. 3-7 against the Rangers (I would bet my soul on the Rangers if these teams meet up). 3-3 against the Orioles. 4-3 against the A's. And there's their most likely opponent, 4-6 against the Yankees. That's theoretically out the window now for the players, but it's still relevant in predicting the outcome of the upcoming series.

Common threads in this recent hot streak?

No Brennan Boesch.
No Don Kelly.
Not a lot of Phil Coke.
(do we dare believe that Leyland has started to figure things out based on these three points? actually playing the guys that give him the best chance to win ... every night? )
Dirks stinging the ball.
Beast mode Miggy.
4 errors the last 8 games (not great, but a huge improvement).
Starting pitching getting it done.
Relief pitching still trying to ruin everything for everyone.

If the bats don't freeze up completely and the starters can stay hot, this is a dangerous team. I don't know if the starters will hold up against the Yankee lineup, and the bats have had a nasty habit of freezing up just when we think they've turned a corner. So I'm not sold. But they're in, and they theoretically have the pieces to make a run. We'll see how they do. And hope like hell they don't have to play the Rangers.

Just saw Rod interviewing Berry, who said he was at a 24 Hour Fitness this time last year, watching the playoffs. You have to be happy for a dude like that - not an ounce of talent aside from his wheels, and he makes some big contributions.

Should be on the playoff rooster. He could be a huge weapon late in a close game. Hopefully he won't have to pick up a bat, though...

That's a relief to have this done now. We're quite lucky when you think about the fact they've not been to back-to-back postseasons since the mid '30s and this is 3 times since 2006. I was too young to remember '84 and really '87 for that matter. This is very much a good time to be a Tiger fan. We've watched a lot of crappy baseball for too long and maybe this team finally has that magic to finish the job. After all that doom and gloom from losing that big game in Chicago a couple weeks ago and they're here now.

As for Cabrera/Trout...if the hardcore nerds want to give the MVP to Trout, Cabrera is going to be the one actually playing beyond Wednesday and he's probably going to have Triple Crown to his credit. Trout is a wonderful talent...I hate having to discredit the guy but are we going put Yaz's season in '67 in high regard and then thumb your nose at Cabrera achieving it? I guess if Cabrera was hitting .350 with 50 HR and 150 RBI...they couldn't have much of an argument. It's been a stretch of dominance and consistency since 2004 and doesn't have an MVP to his credit. But again, give the MVP to Trout just because he puts up some unique numbers. Too bad for Cabrera that just hitting the crap out of the ball isn't exciting enough for some people.

Miggy will win the MVP if he gets the triple crown and the Angels don't make the playoffs. Angels are done so we just need Hamilton to stay cold.

I really do not want the tigers to play the rangers. Yankees would have been ideal.

What is wrong with you?

edit - maybe you're hoping they get humiliated so they will dump Leyland after all?

If Max is healthy, and playing the first two games at home, we might have a better shot knocking them out in the first round than later. In a 5 game series, we might be able to get Verlander and Scherzer to pitch at least three of them.

With the way Sanchez and Fister have been going I dont think that even matters that much honestly.

On the other hand, if JV can't win them game 1 at home then they are totally screwed.

If the Tigers are going to go all the way, I'm convinced they'll be going through Texas, and I think we have a better shot at them in a 5-game series than in a 7-game series (Verlander could pitch in 2 out of 5 games instead of 2 out of 7). Bring on the Rangers

Well, no HRs for Hamilton today, and his season's over. Unless Trout goes 6-for-6 and Cabrera goes 0-for-6, it looks like the Triple Crown is all but clinched.

Crazy that Oakland swept Texas for the division title too. Didn't think that would happen. Looks like we will probably be drawing the A's now. Would love it if the Rangers got bounced in the wild card game.

None of these series will be a cakewalk but I'm glad Detroit dodged Texas for potentially a round.

A New York/Texas matchup would be an ALCS type series.

It's probably going to be Oakland now and they're hot...but much like Detroit, they can be beat.

I hope we stomp the hell out of Oakland. I don't know what it is, but I just don't care for that organization.

Take advantage of the quirky playoff format...win those two at home and put the heat on them to win all 3 back in their park. If it's Oakland (and I don't see how it won't be now)...they'll play the matchups with their lineup and they've got some guys riding the wave of emotion in stealing away that division from the Rangers but the Tigers have the talent and the experience.

So if Miggy is out of the game he basically has won the triple crown now, hasn't he? First time in over 40 years. A legendary feat.

It doesn't have anything to do with their historical association with, and success using, Sabremetrics, does it? The same field of thought that supports Trout winning the MVP over Cabrera? Just asking

I respect Oakland and Billy Beane for what they've been able to do, considering their limited resources. Not an A's fan by any measure, but I respect what they've done. AL teams I don't care for are the Yankees, Red Sox, and Indians. Screw 'em all.

On paper this is a series the Tigers should win.

For sure.

But on paper Oakland had no business winning the West. Texas and LA both wipe the floor with them on paper.

That being said, I like Detroit and they're rotation during this series.
