Phoenix Desert Dogs at Carolina Ice Hogs | Sunday, Oct. 13, 1 PM

I apologize in advance for the lack of a theme. I pretty much gave up on that and just came up with a bunch of random crap, loosely based on animals.

Sunday's matinee at the ESA/RBC Center/PNC Arena/That Big White Building Off Wade Avenue will see the Hurricanes play host to the Phoenix Coyotes (that's still their name, right?). Due to the fact that the puck will drop at 10 am Arizona time, one can logically deduce that somebody's scheduling coordinator is a moron. Pre-game skates are expected to be low-intensity, particularly for the Coyotes.

Conversely, a typical morning for Kyle Chipchura

However, the venerable Dave Tippett knows what it takes to get a pack of wild dogs ready for action.

He knows... he knows.

Curiously, Shane Doan has been extra vigilant since arriving in Raleigh.

Doan spotted earlier today near arena. Unconfirmed reports of a wolfpack in the vicinity, possible contact made.

Meanwhile, the Carolina Ice Hogs are expected to gather for Sunday brunch, eating entirely too much food and negating any possible advantage resulting from the other team being jet lagged.

Sekera: Hey guys, you going to share any of that?

I also heard a rumor that they will be competing in the world-famous pig races at this year's State Fair. The exhausting training regimen for such an excruciating event may have a negative impact on their on-ice performance. #conspirsy #sekret

Sekera again, who clearly has not trained well enough. At least he wore his third jersey.

Lineups (current as of 11:30 am)
Jiri Tlusty - Eric Staal - Alexander Semin
Nathan Gerbe - Jordan Staal - Patrick Dwyer
Jeff Skinner - Riley Nash - Radek Dvorak
Drayson Bowman - Brett Sutter - Tuomo Ruutu (!)

Andrej Sekera - Justin Faulk
Brett Bellemore - Ron Hainsey
Jay Harrison - Ryan Murphy
Komisarek possible if Faulk is a no go

Anton Khudobin
Cam Ward

Mikkel Boedker - Antoine Vermette - Shane Doan
Michael Ribeiro - Martin Hanzal - Radim Vrbata
Lauri Korpikoski - Kyle Chipchura - David Moss
Robert Klinkhammer - Tim Kennedy - Brendon Yip

Oliver Ekman-Larrson - Zbynek Michalek
Keith Yandle - Derek Morris
Rostislav Klesla - David Rundblad

(that's a guess based on their GDT)

Mike Smith
Thomas Greiss

Injuries
Lindholm - undisclosed, day to day
Gleason - concussion, who knows
Faulk - undisclosed, game time decision

My infallible prediction: Coyotes win 5-4. Radim Vrbata gets the hat trick against the team who traded him away for peanuts. Ron Hainsey scores six goals.

I have a tendency to finish things early.

Besides, I was up early to go car shopping today, thus robbing me of glorious Saturday sleeping in. Between making up for it tomorrow and going to the game, I didn't figure on having much time to get this posted in the morning.

I guess the girl from that one Jets-Canes game made her way to sit behind the Coyotes bench

Expect to lose more guys to injury tonight. Phoenix pretty much sent half the flyers team to the locker room with injuries last night.

great, just what they need. maybe we'll see how this team responds. will they stick up for eachother?

while they are playing better overall, this new "all defense" game which tries to limit GA, also tends to limit offensive production it seems. like I said before there has to be some kind of balance struck. hopefully it's part of the plan, a process, but I obviously have little faith in Muller to this point. hopefully that perception changes soon. talk is cheap.

and I'm still not sure where the obvious lack of urgency and tenacity on this team comes from. Eric floats then shows bursts. same goes for Jordan. these guys are the leaders? there is an important piece of the puzzle missing and while it's easy to say that it's personnel, I think it has more to do with attitude. what does Muller have to do with it or does Eric run the room (again, talk is cheap)? hell, if everyone displayed half of Gerbe's spunk this team would be far and away harder to play against and much more apt to win.

not sure where it comes from exactly and while it's easy to place blame on some of the players skill or just plain laziness, their just doesn't seem to be a winning mentality with this team IMO. those little tantrums that Eric exhibits are enigmatic to me.

generally this team is looking better and is showing promise. there's still a ways to go though to be consistently competitive. IMO *most* of the pieces are there and it's up to Muller to get there to work. he looks like a deer in the headlights on the bench to me sometimes.

EDIT: wasn't the leadership issue something that was obvious and addressed by management at the end of last season? they said the room was "quite". this says alot and kind of calls out Eric. no? they clearly see a problem there. idk what to call it, pizzazz, killer instinct? something is amiss. and yes I still think there are some issues with the AHL tweeners. however, something about the team's gumption is an issue. Muller? idk. I'm not in there but............. wasn't the leadership qualities of Komi supposed to help? something is missing in this department IMO.
the team is doing o.k. and it's still early but they just don't seem to play balls to the wall and that's going to be an ongoing problem.

Hainsey has made a quick adjustment and has been playing well. 6 would be nice but 1 would be awesome.

Khudobin to start per Chip.

Also, Murphy in, Komi out. Faulk decision after warmup.

I think this Hainsey scoring 6 goals thing really means Hainsey scoring 6 goals in warm-ups.

That's what you think? I was considering it being the notion that he scores 6 in the shootout.

I also wouldn't be surprised if it was 6 goals in overtime.

So basically there is no starting goalie? Even split so far.

Well, pure speculation but Ward got really worked against LA and could have hurt something in the shootout when he got up gingerly. While it's not a back to back, it's not traditional rest either. They trust Khudobin, and he's playing well, so why not start him?

So we're paying him $6.6M to not play. Fire JR! Rabblerabblerabble!

So if this pattern continues, Ward gets Detroit, Pittsburgh, LA and Chicago.

So the plan is to see how well Ward can play and still remain winless?

Well hopefully Ward is okay but we shouldn't be paying a goalie almost 7 million dollars to play 41 games. I'm not saying he should be played because of the contract, just seems they're trying to find out if Ward is expendable.
