Habs pushing QLB to block NHL lockout in Quebec

According to Stubbs on twitter...

Dave Stubbs ‏@Dave_Stubbs
#NHLPA says #NHL cannot legally lock out #Habs since NHLPA is not a union certified by Quebec Labour Board...

Dave Stubbs ‏@Dave_Stubbs
#NHLPA says #Habs players can apply to QLB for order preventing #Habs from locking them out on or after Sept 15

Dave Stubbs ‏@Dave_Stubbs
On Friday, #Habs players, through a lawyer, sent "cease & desist" order to #Habs & #NHL...

Dave Stubbs ‏@Dave_Stubbs
#NHLPA says unless #NHL ceases "their threat to lockout", #Habs players will apply this week to QLB to stop #Habs from locking out players

Dave Stubbs ‏@Dave_Stubbs
#Habs Erik Cole hopes agreement will be reached with #NHL this week...

Dave Stubbs ‏@Dave_Stubbs
... or, #Habs Cole says, "we would like QLB to... inform (#NHL) that their lockout would be in direct violation of Quebec labour laws"

Dave Stubbs ‏@Dave_Stubbs
#NHLPA could have filed a similar application with QLB in 2004-05 but they had a different legal strategy then

Basically, we'd have to pay them regardless of whether they are locked out or not...Not so sure Molson would be too keen on that!

What would they do in that case? 3 on 3 hockey games at the Bell Centre?

They'd do nothing, but since the lockout would be illegal in Quebec, the team would still be forced to pay them, whereas in other cities, if the owners lock out the players, the players don't get paid.

This could have serious financial implications for the team.

Just as a lockout has big implication on players' salaries. Good for the players, I'm tired of the teams/owners/Bettman not even try to negociate and threaten to lockout every time.

This could mean a lot of things...

For one, the owners (as a collective) have a certain amount of money set aside to cover expenses that would be incurred whether there is a lockout or not. I would highly doubt if they anticipated and have the money required to front that $60+ million payroll in Montreal.

This also means that Montreal ownership, who I'm betting is already on the fence with the position the owners are taking, is now DEFINITELY not interested in a lockout. And I'm betting that here are plenty of other teams, like Philly, NYC, Toronto, and the other high grossers that are not exactly keen on Bettman's current stance. They claim to be united but this could cause some cracks.

This would suck for the habs ownership team. They're paying money and making no revenue. And I'm not sure Geoff Molson is on the same page with the other NHL owners, he loves the sport and he loves the team, he wants to see his team play.

That and the guy just put up a few hundred million to see a return on his investment. Would kind of suck to lose half the season and a ton of revenue.

If Molson ends up having to pay the players, does he in turn launch a suit against the NHL for his losses?

He could easily say his stance was against locking out the players and that these losses are a result of something out of his control.

Maybe this is incentive for PK to sign a contract faster? If he is signed before the 15th there is potential he gets paid...

seems to me he's reporting what members of the NHLPA are saying. If anything, NHLPA is using media to help them put pressure on the NHL, using public opinon.

What are you suggesting? that Stubbs is fabricating all of this?
Love replying to your nonsense.

Remember how people talk fans should boycott the NHL?
Well this hits harder than any boycott, as you pay the players full pop with zero revenue coming in, no "fan boycott" we all can admit ,would see 21,273 fans stayin away for Bell for a week or month or half a year etc....

IF this is in fact what happens, maybe they(owners and GB) will learn the lesson of taking fans for granted.....

The players wouldn't be getting paid when the team/league has no revenue. The non-locked-out players and the Habs/League would be bound by the current CBA and the players would be getting 57% of whatever revenue comes in.

I bet he doesn't. It's not like he isn't getting paid. He owns the bell center and he makes money off of every concert in there, so it's not as if he's cutting off all of his revenue for the year.

I'm sure he loves money and wants as much of it as possible, but he's a lifelong habs fan and when it was time to bid for the habs he put it all out on the table. He paid way over the estimated value and he bleeds bleu blanc rouge. If there's a lockout he loses both as an owner and a hockey fan.

Would be pretty strange to see each and every player having 0 pts in 82 games, wouldn't help their stats Oh, and Stanley Cup without playoffs !

were still ok yet...for a few yrs...lol

Habs coming in at No. 111.
Canadiens fans still have the third-most expensive ticket prices in the NHL and the most expensive beer in all of sports.

If they're not a recognized union, then can't the players just be laid off by the team? They could collect EI during the lockout. When the lockout is over they can all be hired back. No other team, while free to do so, will attempt to sign them.

Dangerous little game the PA is playing here.
