Around The League: Part IV

Almost that time of year again where this thread will be quite active, so I've created one (we didn't carry on from Part 3).

To start things off, Johnny Oduya has re-signed with Chicago for 3 years.

Im interested to see how much the cap hit was, most Hawk fans feel upset over it because they wanted to go after Suter

There was a tweet from a Chicago reporter that it was 3 years, $3M per. A pay cut from the last deal he had.

EDIT: Dreger tweeted this

Quote:
@DarrenDreger

Oduya's contract with Hawks. $3.375 annual average salary.
http://twitter.com/DarrenDreger/stat...28628425199616

So barely a pay cut at all.

I like Oduya, but I can't say I like him at 3 million per year, even if it is less than his prior deal.

Agreed. He is a decent bottom pairing guy at 1.5-2.5 million per season, I think 3/3.375 whatever he got is too high for him. He was at best average in playoffs as well, odd signing but I guess Chicago really needed a veteran on that blueline with all the inexperience there.

2-2.5 and I'd be happy with him in a 3rd pairing role. After he settled down, and stopped throwing out free pizzas, he was fairly solid for us. 3.375 per? Not so sure about that.

EDIT: Holden beat me to it.

I liked how he played at the end of the year, but Oduya is not someone you want to have in your top 4. He can be on your bottom pair, and sometimes fill in as a #4 if there is an injury, but I wouldn't want to pay over 3 million for a 5-6 D man.

You almost always overpay for defencemen you don't develop and acquire through free agency. Hello Ron Hainsey (sorry Lynk)

I wouldn't want him at 10MM over 3 years. 5MM over 2 would have been great.

Wow, there is some serious hatred going on against Johnny Legend from the Chicago fans... I mean, no, he's not worth that kind of salary, but to say it's one of the worst contracts in the league?

I'm surprised that he would get as much as he did from Chicago... watching him in the playoffs he looked ok at best. Isn't Chicago trying to be financially responsible right now? With the removal of Havelind and keeping of Quenville/Kitchen it makes you wonder what kind of internal turmoil Chicago is in.

I won't start on the Kane drama but there's that too.

Ahh well.. good for Johnny... best remember his days as a Jet during the skills competition, sitting on a foldup chair on the ice rocking his Movember!

Well, I think you could understand when you look at it from a Hawks fans POV. They sucked for years and years, stockpiled great players, won a cup but mismanaged the cap so badly they had to dismantle the team after only winning once. I think they are pretty sensitive to bad contracts and how they can hurt a team.

3.35 is an overpay IMHO. It's not as bad as many are making out.

Agreed, but I am willing to overpay for guys that can play top 4, play all situations, solid safe dependable like a Hainsey. Oduya is a bottom pairing guy, did not even play special teams, and when he was off, he was really off. For someone like Oduya I would rather have Postma or Kulda play there at 1 million and use that extra 2 million to upgrade the top 4 (ie as in overpay for a Hainsey) or elsewhere on the roster. I guess in short key player = overpay somewhat is ok. role player = don't overpay.

I think most of it stems from them wanting Bowman to make a pitch for Suter. Re-signing Oduya suggests they're not actively looking to clear up cap space.

You started out the bolded area great, I felt like I could relate to what you were saying, then you lost me...

But yeah, I get the backlash against their GM, but they really seem to think that Oduya sucks. Maybe he was just put in a bad spot in Chicago, I didn't catch too many of their games after he was traded. In my opinion, this would have been ok for a team not looking to win now, it's a bad signing by Chicago though.

I wonder if this is a sign that they are going to cut some of their players with higher caphits. This will probably result in them having troubles signing Stålberg next season, along with having very little capspace to sign FA.

I thought he actually played pretty well for them from what I saw. Maybe its a matter of high expectations from Hawks fans? (centered on team performance more than Johnny's)

If Johnny Oduya (bottom -pairing defenseman) is receiving 3.35 million per season, I think it's safe to say Enstrom (top-pairing defenseman) will be looking for somewhere in the range of $5.5 - $6.0 million per season.

We'll see how the upcoming season goes and what the CBA looks like. Also its supply and demand, I don't know what the free agency crop is liek next off season, if its a deep pool the demand won't be as high.

Also I think the Oduya signing had to do with Chicago overpaying for him when they got him from the Jets. If they lost him to free agency it would have looked pretty bad so they had to sign him to save face.

I think Oduya would probably have garnered at least that on the open market in July. But I agree, it was in Chicago's (management's) interest to sign him or be hammered with criticism for giving up 2 picks for 21 games of Oduya.
