The Ed Reed suspension was downgraded to merely a fine.

Awful. At least Unger in the 2nd turned out to be a win, but holy crap was Curry ever a gigantic bust.

Good for the Raiders last season, then injured this season. Extremely confused by this, but we have massive cap space issues coming up, I shudder to think what we may have to work with this offseason (possibly very little again).

Good. He didn't deserve to be suspended.

Not really

Alot of quality players were drafted thru entire draft

Bears for instance grabbed DT Henry Melton and CB DJ Moore in 4th round + WR Johnny Knox in 5th round and G Lance Louis in 6th round

- Melton is one of the best DT's in NFL
- Moore is a good Nickel CB
- Knox has been productive WR (And a Pro Bowl return man)
- Lance Louis is best part of Bears awful OL ,, Him and Garza are only guys not terrible

I wouldn't call it awful, but when you compare it to the drafts immediately preceding it, the 2009 draft does look very underwhelming. There are many solid NFL starters that came from that draft, but the relative dearth of high end talent is glaring. Clay Matthews and Lesean McCoy are the only two truly elite players from 2009. When I say truly elite, I mean players that are already or have the legitimate potential to be First-Team All-Pro's. Brian Orakpo, Matthew Stafford, and Josh Freeman may end up joining them. Percy Harvin, Mike Wallace, Brian Cushing, Hakeem Nicks, and Jeremy Maclin, among others, are in the second tier of players. They are Pro Bowl-caliber players, but none will likely ever be considered the best at their position.

The problem is that the 2009 draft is going to always be compared to the drafts directly before it. And when 2008 features names like Matt Ryan, Ray Rice, Matt Forte, Chris Johnson, Jake Long, Desean Jackson, Jamaal Charles, Chris Long, and Carl Nicks, just to name a few, it makes 2009 look worse than it might actually be. Not to mention, if we are talking about elite, All-Pro type players, absolutely dominant players, the 2007 draft may put everyone else to shame. Between Patrick Willis, Darrele Revis, Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, and Joe Thomas, you are talking about arguably the two best defensive players in the game, the best running back and best wide receiver in the game, and the best offensive lineman in the game. That is an absolutely remarkable top end of the draft.

If you go further back in the decade, the 2009 draft doesn't look all that bad compared to what you find.

Matthew Stafford
Brian Orakpo
Brian Cushing
Malcolm Jenkins
Josh Freeman
Jeremy Maclin
Brandon Pettigrew
Alex Mack
Percy Harvin
Michael Oher
Clay Matthews
Hakeem Nicks
Kenny Britt
Beanie Wells

That's awful? And that's in the first round

Then you have James Laurinaitis, Andy Levitre, Jarius Byrd, LeSean McCoy, Phil Loadholt, Sebastian Vollmer, William Moore in the 2nd round.

It's not a bad draft. 2008 is just as bad along with 2007.

What Blades of Glory said. Most of those players are good but unspectacular . You've got 9 pro bowl players in the entire draft. Between Wells, Nicks, Maclin, Harvin, and Britt you've got exactly three 1,000 yard seasons between the 5 of them playing almost 20 years. We can even add Crabtree, Moreno, Heyward-Bey and Donald Brown (0 combined 1k seasons) to that list. Everyone keeps waiting for Brandon Pettigrew to break out and he never has anything more than an above average season. Stafford is injury prone and looks to be regressing. Everyone knows Sanchez is awful and after trading for Jason Smith, that now makes two busts on the Jets. I say 2, because they cut Aaron Maybin last week. Vontae Davis is so bad he got pushed to Nickel behind Richard Marshall and then later dealt to the worst team in the league.

And that is just the first round. Some of these players aren't awful, but you expect more out of first rounders. But then look some 2nd rounders: Darius Butler, Everette Brown, Pat White, Brian Robiskie. And those are just the guys that busted hard.

BWC, "not terrible" is the running theme of this draft. But when you have an entire draft of "not terrible", it makes the draft as a whole pretty terrible.

so if Ryan Clark delievers a silimar hit, no suspension right?

not that I think it was suspension worthy I think they are waiting for the right guy to use to "set an example" of the NFL's push for player safety.

Ballsy move by Harbaugh

Cant imagine Smith is too happy ,, Could have left in offseason to be a sure #1 somewhere else (There are plenty of teams in need of a QB)

I imagine this will likely be Smith's final year in SF

Not a fan of it, Smith has had one bad game all year and has been solid to very good in all of the others. I don't think one game is enough to make the switch...hopefully it works out though.

I wouldn't go too far either way on this decision. if kaepernick struggles early on, I could see him sticking Smith right back out there.

Against the Saints' 31st ranked pass defense and 32nd ranked run defense, you pretty much can start any human being not in a wheelchair as the quarterback and you will be fine.

Those numbers are really not that impressive. Smith is last in attempts so his completion % is going to be high. He is also 2nd to last in yards a game.

Month old article about Alex Smith

Now I know why Davis was so happy after the game. Kaepernick threw him some passes that Smith would have never attempted.

There's some value in the middle of the 1st round.

Yes they are. Completion percentage is a rate stat and attempts is a counting stat so I'm not sure why they have any correlation. Smith is not a check down king since his RB's has few receptions.

If you want to put down his completion %, look at his YPA. (His YPA by the way is good for 2nd in the NFL)
