This is the article, but I don't see any data or anything when I go to it.

EDIT: Nevermind, I guess it's supposed to be blocked? Just google all the relevant words and you should be able to find it pretty easily, if you really want to.

How can they be the smartest if they're aren't in the top 20?

How are the Penguins that high? Drafting Malkin and Crosby isn't hard. And the Magic are too high. They just got played by their franchise player.

They are putting a lot of weight on recent championships and playoff wins. It's no accident that every team that has won the Cup in the last five years is above us in the rankings.

The Devils were never really a cheap team considering how Lou had trouble being under the cap. They still won but still.

Yea the whole concept behind the rankings is skewed because of how it only takes in the past 5 or so years - in order to actually see how teams have progressed and made smart decisions, you need a far bigger time period to work with like 10 years or more

In that top 20, only 8 teams have been consistently good the past 5 years - the Red Wings, Celtics, Giants, Steelers, Sharks, Patriots, Heat, and Spurs - otherwise the other 12 teams on that list were lottery pick or bottom feeder teams 5-6 years ago which does not nearly come close to making an organization smart (smart for not ****ing up the top 5 draft pick, yea thats about it )

Pretty idiotic list, really. I know I'm biased as a Mets fan, and I certainly know that they're not setting the world ablaze right now, but ranking them 120 out of 122 when there's a clear, first-time-since-the-80's rebuilding process going on with a guy as intelligent as Alderson at the helm? Please.

Being "smart" isn't necessarily about being able to win despite financial shortcomings, though that can certainly be a factor, but the Devils do deserve a high ranking based on their draft record, their consistent ability to overcome key player losses to free agency, along with the obvious, being the only time besides Detroit to make the playoffs so consistently.

I will say that the Pens are ranked too highly, but they DO deserve a good spot. I can't stand them in many ways (no team should be admired for tanking entire seasons that often), but I do admire that they're trying to implement some more advanced statistical analysis into their in-game strategizing these days.

We didn't trade Parise last year, or at all. Of course not.

Anyway, that list is ****ed.

That's why they are ranked so low though. They are rebuilding due to the lack of good decision making.

1. No championships in franchise history
3. One championship since Bettman's first lockout, and it came following three straight top 2 overall picks. Wow.
4. No championships in franchise history
6. One championship since Watergate
7. One championship since the first George Bush.
10. One championship since the first moonlanding.
15. No championships in franchise history.
17. No championships in franchise history.
18. One championship in franchise history.
19. No championships in franchise history.
20. One championship in their 40+ year franchise history.

That top 20 is silly if it's even slightly considering on field/court/ice success, although I have no idea what the original article uses as its criteria.

The top 5 should include the Lakers, Yankees, Spurs, Red Wings, and Steelers in some order.

They've been in the playoffs or competitive (2008 AL champs) for half a decade in a division with the two biggest spenders in the league. They basically blow the team up every offseason and come back stronger. All with a payroll that's always in the bottom 10 of a league with no salary cap.

Pretty sure this list is ranked by amount spent per wins.

That's why a team like the Yankees is ranked so low.
Even the Devils, as they've been a perennial cap ceiling team up until now.

Tampa does a fair amount of winning for spending relative peanuts, which is how they get number 1.

I'm not sure if the data is weighted in any way... if its not, it's a little too simplistic to take anything of value from its rankings.

That's more because they finally got a good development staff and their draft picks have panned out.

Haha! Funny timing cause I'm actually going to a Rays/Yankees game tomorrow night. I go to a few games a year with my buddy. I don't like the stadium much cause being outside is one of the things I appreciate about going to baseball games. Not a fan of the dome.
