To San Jose: Roberto Luongo & Alex Edler (Canucks replace Edler's spot with Ballard)
To Vancouver: Patrick Marleau & Ryane Clowe
Both teams improve even though both teams trade away very good players who were expected to be core players. The skill levels of all four players are fairly equal and considerably above average but the two teams trade players from areas they have depth at their respective positions and receive players in areas that each of those teams need to bolster. San Jose especially as that team really needs help in goal and in the top four defense position.
If this trade went through, I would consider both the Sharks and the Canucks would jump well ahead of the Kings in both the regular season standings and cup finalist potential.

I would, San Jose won't. Luongo to San Jose has been....well a non-starter.

what use do the Canucks have for Marleau exactly when Kesler is back?? so we just gave up our best offensive d-man and a top 10 goalie to a team that may become a divisional rival in the next couple years the NHL re-aligns the divisions for a good power foward and a 2C we don't need?
Not to mention our 3rd pairing is now Alberts Tanev playing 10-15 minutes a game! Just terrible. Now if it was Luongo + Raymond for Niemi + Clowe, it would make more sense for the Canucks but with how HF values Luongo and Raymond, that wouldn't go over well. Plus I don't think it fills SJ's need. Don't they want more offense? so Why would improving goaltending while downgrading their wingers help them?
This makes sense for neither team. SJ would never give up that much, and lose two key pieces of their offense and get none back, and the Canucks cannot afford to trade Edler at this point IMO

Luongo is by far a better, more consistant goalie than Niemi. If the Sharks had Luongo then Niemi could be traded to either the Leafs or the Blue Jackets.
With Kesler back:
D Sedin - H Sedin - Clowe
Burrows - Marleau - Kesler (Marleau is a better playmaker than Kesler)
Booth - Malhotra - Hansen
Higgins - Lapierre - Kassian
Raymond - Schroeder
Goaltending and Defense aren't problems for the Sharks. Depth scoring is our problem so we aren't trading 2 of our top 6 fowards for defenseman and goalies.
1) Doug Wilson has repeatedly stated he hates contracts like Luongo's, I highly doubt that the Sharks all of sudden would change their mind.
2) While Edler is a good player, the Sharks are fine on defenseman. Adding Edler while depleting the already fairly thin depth in the top 6 doesn't make the Sharks a much better team, even if they flip Niemi for a player like MacArthur.
canucks do need more proven scoring, yes, but taking away Edler's 50 points is pretty crippling, IMO (our D starts to look very mediocre w/o him.)
Luongo continues to get criminally underrated, but i can see sharks fans being fine w Niemi ... 69-40-15 with 12 shutouts and solid #s is nothing to sneeze at..
Also they are set on D with a top 4 of Burns-Boyle / Vlasic-Stuart and good young guys coming up. Both teams need more proven scoring ... IMO SJ just needs an upgrade on their bottom 6 ...anyway...
but needs not being met and overall weariness with Van proposals aside, let's not say there isn't good value in this proposal ...

This is just not true at all, Vlasic-Burns Stuart-Boyle so I don't see any need for help there, you need to look into the sharks needs before just stating what we need.

terrible use of cap space. Probably doesn't even fit under the cap as we gain about 2M in cap hits and have almost 4M tied up in the press box. One of the worst 3rd pairings in the league is also a very very bad idea seeing how our goaltending duo is top 3 in least NHL experience along with Washington and Boston (assuming a Rask Khudobin duo)
Probably won't get Doan so we can then try to pry Evander Kane from Winnipeg if he did infact demand a trade. 2 1sts + Howden + Raymond would be a great starting point. a mid to late 1st a late 1st a good prospect and a 2nd/3rd line tweener winger who has shown he can put up 40+ points when healthy.
