Ottawa Extends Zack Smith [4 Years, $1,887,500/year]

http://senators.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=640941

Quote:
Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray announced today that the club has signed centre Zack Smith to a four-year contract extension through the 2016-17 NHL season.

Smith, 24, appeared in all but one of the Senatorsí 82 regular-season games in 2011-12, establishing new statistical career highs in goals (14), assists (12), points (26) and plus/minus (+4) while accumulating 98 penalty minutes. He recorded one assist (on Chris Neilís overtime-winning goal in Game 2 of the clubís Eastern Conference quarter-final series) during seven post-season contests against the New York Rangers.
He can probably be dropped from Rumors now!

Dag. Was hoping he'd turn into a journeyman of sorts and find his way to Buffalo.

This will probably be a signing I'm envious of.

The kid was a young Shane Corson (this era, not the high scoring 80s before people call murder) to start off the season, gets hit in the head earlier this year and his play went down significantly.

The signing suggests that he may have recovered from whatever was ailing him. If he can show the form he showed at the beginning of last season, this is an excellent signing for a bruising young 3rd line centre who has the potential to hit 15-20 goals every year.

Awesome. BMurr's been on the ball with the re-signings and I think that's a great cap hit for a guy like Zack Smith.

1.8 for Zack Smith? That's an awesome deal for the Sens. Was expecting 2.0-2.4 AAV.

Personally I'm pretty meh about the deal. The first half of the season he was playing like a 3 million plus dollar player, second half he looked like a 700K guy. Really wish that the Zach Smith has some consistency moving foward.

That being said its good getting a core guy signed up for five years (Still has one year on old contract)

Bryan Murray really impressing me lately. A good evaluator of talent and a great hockey mind. Sens lucky to have him.

Too be honest as someone who watches the organization alot, Brian Murray really heavily relies on Pierre Dorion and Tim Murray. Combined I would say that most of his decisions are based heavily, heavily on their opinions

7-8M is my guess.

pretty weird that kids like turris and smith have suddenly become core.

edit: 7.55M. Weird contract value. Probably escalating.

A little too much term for someone that can't really score, pass or do much outside of being an energy guy. Makes me wonder if these vaunted prospects are actually any good, because whose spot is Smith going to take once they mature?

Do you think he's out of place as our 3C? Not to mention he's 24, and it's silly to assume that only the very highly skilled players get better through their 20's. Even if prospects come up and earn a spot ahead of him, at 4C he's no liability. And the term on this contract would make him pretty easy to move IMO (heaven forbid).

In other words, I like the signing

I'm not loving this or hating it right now.

If Smith has any kind of progression it is going to be a very good deal, considering the cap has less impact now and more in a couple years.

This reminds me of Burrows' last contract. Great value for the Sens. Lets be real though, Smith is a great 3rd line player, but he won't ever match Burrows' point totals.
