Well, I'll probably sound like conceited, but I really don't see it. A beautiful goal, sure, but nothing about it makes it that special. The touch to get the ball down is perfectly done, but it's not that tough to do. I won't control every ball like that I'm sent for, but at least one here or there. And the rest is perfectly done, but nothing overly difficult. I think the biggest thing about that goal is probably the context. You do rarely see a goal like that scored in such a game, and at such a time.

In terms of Bergkamp goals only, I like the one against Newcastle a lot more. That took that special finesse element, and not just tidy execution.

I would be willing to bet that 90% of the players in professional football could not execute that goal the way that Bergkamp did if given the chance 100 times to do it.

You're underselling just how tough it is to not only bring the ball down with a perfect touch in full stride when the ball was sent from some 60+ meters, but also then have the composure to nutmeg the defender and finally the perfect amount of power in his strike to lift it above the goaltender and into the corner.

Everything about that goal was sublime.

Ugh, can't edit.

When you take all of that, and then combine it with the context of the goal it just becomes immaculate.

You're probably right about those 90%, because "professional football" includes quite a few leagues below the top flights. It's obviously only something for the most technically gifted players, but if you take those, I'm feeling very confident it wouldn't take many of those 100, or even 10 times, to get it done.

I guess I am underselling it, but a bit deliberately. The touch was all that made it. The move around the defender was pretty easy with him being apparently still wondering how Bergkamp got that ball in the first place, he was a pylon on that. And after that, he had so much of an open net to shoot at, that was pretty much a must-finish.

It really was. I don't want to make it sound like it's not amazingly done / perfectly executed. It absolutely was. But to me, no component about it stands out enough to give it a title like that.

But it's fair to disagree, it obviously comes down to preference with these aesthetics.

Absolutely. I know people that would consider the rocket shot that Ronaldo scored recently to be a nicer goal than Bergkamp's. I just appreciate all the contributing parts to that goal, along with the importance of it...not to mention the announcer puts a cherry on top.

With that Bergkamp goal, it's pretty crazy that he only had 3 touches and all were with one foot before it went in.

I would start crying if I saw somebody repeat that.

This is probably every Croatia fan's favorite football goal:

Davor Suker might be an arse in person, but the man was a generational striker.
