Justin Upton for Cliff Lee, it's happening.

Phillies and Diamondbacks are discussing Justin Upton for Cliff Lee. Money coming to AZ would also be involved

I honestly hope it doesn't happen. I have a fondness for Cliff Lee

That trade would be excellent for us. Yes, I absolutely love Cliff Lee, but we desperately need outfield help. Justin Upton is the best available outfielder as well, and under control for three years. It would be a good deal for the Phillies.

My first thought. Was RF a need?

Second thought. What happens with Dom Brown?

Third thought. How much are we giving Arizona?

Finally...who plays CF?

I hear you, it makes perfect sense, but my heart doesn't want it to happen haha

I wonder if they think he can handle CF. He was a CF in the minors, moved to RF due to Chris Young. He's one of the most athletic players to come around. Ran a 6.2 60 prior to his draft.

He could possibly play CF as I said. If not, Dom moves to LF and competes with Ruf and they have to get a CF.

If this move goes down:

They save payroll in the near term
They get younger (Upton's a week older than Dom Brown)
They don't gut the farm system like with deals prior
They need to add another starter

This is where CootaRoo comes and tells us how Mayberry is a better player because he had a higher WAR last year.

Now they are reporting it is "off base". Means one thing though, the Phillies are in on Justin Upton, and he would be a major upgrade to our team.

I'd be ok with this if another big move followed. I don't want to give up Cliff Lee and have a hole in our pitching (what should be our strong point) and still not fix the two biggest issues (CF and 3B)

Don't know how much, if any, money they'll save payroll until we know how much money they are sending to Arizona. The difference between total money is ~45M so if they send that to Arizona, there is no savings.

Wonder if they'll bat him 2nd or 3rd?

What if the Phillies traded Lee for Upton and then went out and signed Greinke. That would be hilarious.

I said I'd put even money on Frandsen having a better WAR than Young this upcoming year (Frandsen around 0 and Young in the negative would be what I'd put the most money on to hedge bets) and would gladly put my money where my mouth is if you'd like. Young is useless with the glove (always has been) and his age seems to have taken his bat. That being said, you are more than welcome to want to eat 10-16M on a age-declined 3B while giving up prospects for the right to do so - just as I have the right to question your baseball acumen for having that desire.

As for Upton for Lee - it makes a TON of sense for the future (especially if he can transition adaquately to CF, which I have to assume is the Phil's end game hope), but it is also pretty debilitating to our rotation for the present. If Halladay doesn't bounce back (which is a very real concern for me) we are suddenly looking very thin there. Here's hoping Rube follows this deal with putting Zack Greinke under out tree.

Well the rumor is being denied fairly quickly now

It was really fun while it lasted, the whole 15 mins.

Maybe this is the antithesis of last week when every writer assured a deal that had not yet been consummated was 100% done.

Ruben strongly shoots down Lee Arizona rumor. It is false, he says.
Not that Ruben would say its true either.

I saw a Worley+Cloyd/May for Fowler trade rumor.

Also saw that AZ is searching for a SS more than a pitcher and the Phillies are still discussing Upton sans Lee - a big prospect package with Galvis in it?

Greinke would end up in the hospital from severe panic attacks after his first bad game here. No thanks.

The Phillies don't have the prospects to land Upton without totally destroying the farm. Best bet is a 3-way deal.

Depends on how they view Galvis and Brown (Galvis because they need/want a SS and Brown to fill Upton's hole) - could be anywhere from potential all-stars to platoon/utility players.

I like Justin Upton and would love to get him. But trading Cliff Lee for a second time would be a horrendous mistake.

Now on ESPN they were just talking about Boston being interested in Lee and possibly a Cliff Lee for Jacoby Ellsbury swap.
