Maybe 2013.
Summer/Fall of 2013 that is. This was more posturing. I think what happened this week was the NHL actually took up Fehr on his offer to negotiate. Whereas a couple weeks ago they refused to meet since they wouldn't go off their proposal. When Fehr's memo to the players went public it seemed to not be a good sign.
I'm not giving up hope yet. The NHL is still willing to meet.
The fact they're meeting is better than nothing, but they've been meeting for 20+ hours over the last 4 days, and not including Steve Fehr, and Bill Daly's 12 hour or whatever it was marathon last weekend. Though with all this we still have ended up with that ever so famous line this lockout season!
I can't imagine what Marty will look like sitting out a year. In 05 he wasn't that good when they came back from the last lockout. He was probably worse in the first half of that season than he was the first half of last year, and that's no exaggeration. It also didn't help with our acquired all star D men turned million dollar AHL guys Mcgillis, and Malakhov.
At this point I can see the NHL cracking, and trying to go to where the PA originally wanted. Then Don gives them a big F you, and tells them it's too late, and that ship has sailed. Should have taken it the first time. I can see Fehr doing that too. Not at this point in time meaning now, but down the line.

They will throw Fehr out before then, like Goodenow before. An overwhelming majority if players can't afford it give up a full season. They will never make it up even with abetter deal and they know it.
Yeah Fehr needs to go. He's half the problem here. Actually at this point he's 3/4ths of the problem. He needs to go, and he needs to go as soon as possible. Why aren't the players jumping on him to get a deal done? He's been playing games the whole time.

Fehr's not the problem. Bettman is the problem.
Fehr's negotiation tactics are questionable, but it's because of how Bettman has negotiated prior to this one. He's run over the PA and has practically gotten the owners everything they've wanted. There's no reason for their to be a lockout, that's Bettman's tactic. Fehr is finally showing that the NHLPA isn't going to cave in to every demand of the NHL, they want a fair deal. Fehr is trying to secure them a fair deal, but the NHL only wants a deal that favors their side.
What it seems like is Fehr is being hard-headed to force the NHL's hand to caving in, because once the NHL sees that the PA is caving in, they are going to look at it as a sign of weakness. He doesn't want to give them any opportunity to see that they are in a desperate state. Every time the NHLPA has seemed desperate in the past, the NHL has taken advantage of it, we saw this in the last lockout when the NHLPA came back desperate for a deal, the NHL not only got the salary cap they wanted, but they also heavily rollbacked contracts.
I blame Bettman and the owners for locking out in the first place. The whole thing is pretty stupid. Ever since the lockout though Fehr has become a real ball breaker/game player. If Fehr tries to fight the salary cap this thing is gonna explode.
Rumor has it Fehr wants the players to receive 100 percent of their salaries for the year if there is any season at all. That ain't right if there isn't 82 games. In 95 they played like 48 games. Players got 48% of what their salary would have been that year.
We have seen enough from Fehr and NHLPA... They want to get back at owners for 04-05 and that is why they hired Fehr
No, they want a fair deal. That's why they hired Fehr. All the deals the NHL has proposed so far have been massively one-sided, every lockout before this one the NHL has come out victorious in negotiations. The PA want to make sure it doesn't happen this time, and that's why Fehr was hired.
His tactics, questionable, but he is doing what the players need, and they desperately need a sense of direction and to be seen by the owners as equals not as inferior to them.

Like I said, he's being hard-headed. He's not giving the NHL any sign of weakness or desperation. The NHL has pounced on these signs in the past, it forces the NHL's hand. Fehr and the players know they aren't coming out of a deal with a 57-43 split again, but they also know that they don't want to go down to 50-50 without getting something in return.
They need a reason to drop their HRR, and just like any negotiation, the NHL is going to have to compromise on other points or give them concessions in other areas. The NHL has previously avoided doing the latter, instead getting everything they wanted in previous deals by taking advantage of weakness and desperation in the PA. Fehr was brought in to stabilize the PA and prevent the owners from looking at them as inferior.
Larry Brooks @NYP_Brooksie
Told that PA proposed that players get last year's share plus 5 pct this yr regardless of schedule length/actual revenue...
Larry Brooks @NYP_Brooksie
Last year's share was 1.883B...plus 5 pct would be $1.977B...would likely eat 65-67 pct of revenue in 66-68 game season.

Blah. Every time we think they're getting close, they tease us with this crap again. At least nobody stormed out after 15 minutes like last time.

Wouldn't surprise me if that's what ends up happening. Soon only the guys with the "lockout protection" signing bonuses in their contracts will be able to stay afloat while being out of work. Once the majority of players are hurting, they'll have to settle.
