Very nice writeup.

Seems we need to do something with a Dman to free up space for younger players at lower cap hits who play the same game. Having a hard time seeing where Gerbe fits on this now as well

Would signing ShaMo to a one or two year contract for less than what he's making now as our #6 defenseman be such a bad idea?

Now, I doubt ShaMo would agree to a deal with the Sabres, and will probably go somewhere like Columbus where he'll be promised a top 6 role, but If it's a choice between ShaMo and Weber, I'd take the former every day of the week and twice on gamedays.

Killer jfb, thank you.

Two quick questions. Am I understanding it right that Kaleta's QO is ~$1M? If so that makes the decision... interesting. Secondly, arbitration rights are granted by age, right? This is why Biega is arbitration eligible but other guys coming off ELCs aren't?

Yes, Kaleta's QO is $955,000 x 105% but it's a two-way contract because of his amount of games played, so I doubt he accepts it.
I'm sure they'll qualify him, but it'll just be a formality and there will have to be a negotiation.

As for Biega, arbitration rights are based on years of professional experience, which varies depending on signing age.
Since he signed in 2010, his signing age is 22, which means he needs two years professional experience to gain arbitration rights.

It wouldn't be such a bad idea but I for one would rather the kids to battle it out for the final defensive roster positions. We can probably dump Weber in a minor deal or a package with any number of players that the team may be shopping.

Are you estimating the 70 million dollar cap? I have not seen anywhere where they projected it to be that high.

I doubt that it stays that high when the new CBA kicks in, but until 9/15, that will likely be the upper limit.
I've recommended before that we just operate under the assumption that there will be no increase though.

The way I see it, if the sabres operate under the assumption that the new cap will be the same as the current cap that gives us plenty of space to make moves during the season to improove this team. With guys like boyes and hecht off the payroll we can sign our players and do what we need to. As was stated earlier, Id love for them to try and get ShaMo to cut his salary and have him stay on the sabres, not in rochester for a year or two. He is way better then webber. Sign Sulzer, then let Morrison Regehr sulzer mcnasty and brennan fight for the last two spots, send brennen to the minors and I wouldn't be too upset if our defensive lineup was:

Myers - McNabb
Ehrhoff - Sulzer
Sekera - _________

Let Leopold and Regehr work out that last spot in camp whoever looses out sits in the pressbox with Morrisson. This also allows you to give any of your defensemen bigger minutes for meaningful games and rest them in lesser games.

Also it would probably give us the best defensive depth in the league....

As for offense there it gets tricky:

Before you make any moves your lines look like this:

Foligno - Ennis - Stafford
Leino - Roy - Pomminville
Vanek - Hodgeson - Tropp
Gerbe - McCormick - Ellis

My offseason offensive checklist:

-Sign Kaleta ro a reasonable deal, I like him as a shutdown forward moving into the future.
- Look to find a Center who will play on our fourth line in a shutdown role. Scoring ability is not required. - Note: Preferably not Gaustad...his time in buffalo is over. Size preffered but not necissary.
- Big tough power forward. Either one or two. If one, then place him on the line with Vanek and Hodgeson, let tropp stay in rochester, if you get two, move gerbe as part of a deal for one of them, tropp is available also. Then move leino down to the shutdown line. I think he would excell in that role if put onto it full time with no pressure to put up points. I think with leino and kaleta on that line, points will come.
- IF the team decides to move derek roy, I wouldn't mind moving assets in what would be considered a latteral move to obtain a guy such as Statsny. He's no better then roy, but it gives us a fresh start with him, and I personally think we need his type of center, just not him neccisarily. Another option would be to call up Anneheim. See if they would say no to a deal similar to Roy and Both our first round picks for Getzlaf. If they don't want roy, try and get a first for Roy, then offer them 3 firsts in this years draft for him. Id call that a hefty offer that any GM would have to think about. If not Anneheim 3 first round picks or two and roy might be enticing enough for LA to move one of their young centers, or even get colorado to give up on one of duchene or oreilly. Personally I think 3 firsts in the same draft would be a great offer for nearly any player.
-Pick up a gritty fighting mean forward with a little bit of skill for our 10th forward....wouldn't mind it.

Our final lineup:

PF1 - New Center/Roy - Pomminville
Foligno - Ennis - Stafford
Vanek - Hodgeson - PF2
Leino - Shutdown Center - Kaleta
-McCormick
-Fighting winger
-Ellis
-Gerbe

(2 or three of those extra forwards get moved)

Our Center depth: Roy/replacement, Ennis, Hodgeson, Defensive center, Leino, McCormick, Ellis. Not too bad

Defense

Myers - Sekera
Ehrhoff - Sulzer
McNabb - Morrisson/Regehr
Morrison/Regehr
Brennan
Weber (If nobody will take him move him to the minors)

Miller
Enroth

With Morrisson and Regehr cycling games to keep both of them fresh, as they are both older players.
Is Leopold being moved before the season?

Honestly though I think. Leopold will probably be traded in the offseason...if not then they don't bother with Morrison.

Since, unfortunately, it's going to be a long offseason, I'm going to create some related polls to gauge some roster interest, while trying to avoid the inevitable "This is my super-elite roster that would never actually happen"

is this the proper place for :

re-sign Ennis

3 yrs / 9 million / 3.0 CAP

And he would still be a RFA at the end of the deal, right?

Under the current agreement, yes.
He'd be 25 at the end of that deal and would likely only have five accrued seasons.

3 year deal is definitely the best route to go in my opinion, followed by 2 years.

If he was signed to a three year deal and then a two year deal, he'd end up being 27 and an unrestricted free agent under the current agreement.

I think he means for signing him now, as in "if you can't sign him to a 3 year deal, 2 is next best option".

Regehr and Leopold would both play over McNabb and Sulzer, as they should.
