Why the hell would Boston play hardball? The Bruins are one of the more profitable teams in the league and they are cup contenders right now, wow everything about the Bruins truly is awful.
I feel like Molson would cave in pretty easily if it was up to him, we don't have much to gain since we can outspend the majority of the league.
I believe its for ideological reasons for Jacobs and Snider. They are also two who think long term, average lifespan for an NHL owner is about 4-7 years while they've been at it for decades.
Bill Wirtz did all sorts of self-defeating things also, but he had the fingers on the levers of power and so had lots of control over league policy.
The one thing Molson probably wants is very little revenue sharing, much like MLSE. Both want the cash machine that is their franchise playing games and need the money (Toronto to pay dividends to shareholders, Montreal to pay down his purchasing debt). Unfortunately, despite being the league's cash cows I don't think they have as much influence as the hardliners.
Too bad Buttman and Fehr are really into making this an ego fight
I hope for the NHL's sake that the average NHL fan doesn't have the attitude that if there's another full season lost we won't care if you lose 2 or 3 seasons. There won't be any winners out of this if they lose another full NHL season but neither side seems to give a crap about that at this point.
