Correct me if i'm wrong, but the draft order for the 2013 draft is basically random. Some teams have a higher % of picking earlier than others but other than that, its a random drawing.

So, if the Hawks have a top 5, top 10 pick in 2013, who do they draft?

Less top 10 and more top 2, but

Seth Jones would be to the Hawks what spinach is to Popeye.

Do you see what I did there?

Are there any other defenseman worthy of picking in the top 10? AFAIK there aren't any franchise goalies this year, the Hawks absolutely do NOT need another forward prospect. It seems like defense or center are the only two ways to go...oh and BPA of course

Rasmus Ristolainen is a good all around two way D-man with size, also shoots right.

heh, unless we miraculously land #1 or #2, there's no way we're getting MacKinnon or Jones, so let's not even think about them.

I'm not going to claim to be a prospect expert, but if we do land a top ten draft pick, I've heard good things about Curtis Lazar (WHL Edmonton), who could fill our obvious center needs, and Ristolainen, who's apparently a very promising defenseman from Finland.

I'm not going to claim to be a prospect expert, but if we do land a top ten draft pick, I've heard good things about Curtis Lazar (WHL Edmonton) and Jonathan Drouin (QMJHL Halifax), both of whom could fill our obvious center needs, and Ristolainen who's apparently a very promising defenseman from Finland.
If we're going center, Monahan, Barkov, Lindholm, Lazar, and Drouin would all be in the mix. I've seen a lot of mentions of Ristolainen in mock drafts in the top ten with Pulock and Zadorov just on the outside of it.

I like Shinkaruk too though. If he's the BPA when we pick, I'd be just fine with that.

Discounted Barkov as he seems to likely be a reasonably safe #3, but agree with the rest of your points minus me not really knowing much about Shinkaruk or Monahan just yet.

I've watched videos of both. I just haven't gotten to watching any CHL games, which I should probably do to form an adequate opinion.

I say trade down and accumulate more picks

With no 2nd/3rd rounder and a reasonably deep draft (At least last time I heard about this draft it was to be a good one)

Were deep though. This is the time to put everything into 1 or 2 high upside, top guys.

I agree...it would be nice to pick in the top 5 this year.

Trading down? I wouldnt do it. Last time the Hawks traded down... lets see... Remi Royer anyone.

The attrit rate grows exponentially with every pick. This isnt the NFL where you can still reasonably expect to salvage picks/players going down.

I would prefer not to trade down. This team would not be picking in that position for quite a few years. Maybe a decade. So get that top talent when you have the chance instead of trading down.

If we pick, say 6th-10th, and we assume the top 5 are MacKinnon, Jones, Barkov, Drouin and Lindholm, then Chicago would be left with Shinkaruk, Pulock, Ristolianen, Burakowsky, Nurse, Domi and Lazar as the next group of players in that range that could be picked there, among a couple others. Personally, my favourite Dman propsect in this draft, outside of Jones, is Josh Morrisey.. if the Hawks have a chance to grab him, they should. I know the stats may not suggest top-10, but the kid was outstanding at the Ivan Hilkna and is an great skater with size, a heavy shot, hockey sense, defensive ability.. he's a very talented player.

i'd try to get monahan if he's there...but i think he might go at 4 or 5.

no way would i take domi in the top 10...in fact, i would avoid him altogether.

i'd go with shinkaruk if monahan wasn't available.

I'm assuming the pick isn't in the top 3 overall.

Trade the pick for a quality player. The system is deep, use a high pick to help land top 6/top 4 veteran type with at least a couple years left of affordability or age before Sharp's wheels go, Hossa's age catches up, or Seabrook's career is in danger because of concussions.

Do not trade the pick in a package for a goalie unless the name is Rinne.

While I agree that if all things are equal, you want to lean towards defensemen. If you're picking top 10 though - whoever you select probably is going to be your top prospect - and therefore you absolutely have to go for BPA. BPA becomes less important as you fall down the draft, but is a must in the top 10.
