this is what happens when you come up with an unsustainable business model and carry around 25% of your league as dead weight.

Only the threat of sponsors pulling out will get the NHL to move now, imo.
He also just reported the owners will absorb the Make Whole agreement.

Which means that the owners will pay out the rest of the contracts currently signed at a later date and it won't come from players shares.

It's a step.

apparently, they're saying they'll absorb *part* of it - and no formal offer to that effect has been made

LeBrun reports they're meeting Saturday.

We know the split will be 50-50.

The issues are how do they get their and how much do salaries get cut by and how to they get their money whole.

I think a 50-50 split now including a current salary cut but a make whole provision by the owners and not by player salaries later on is fair to everyone. Players get their current contract paid even if later on and it own't cost players money in the future and owners can cut costs that are losing money.

GET IT DONE!

Just get it done. I love the NBA and watching the Bulls, but I need my hockey fix. We all do. I love going to games at the UC, the practices, watching with the family and my friends, etc. I know that sounds cheesy and Captain Obvious-like, however, it's the damn truth.

a benefit of the "make whole" provision is it delays the payment of salaries.

at it's essence the players' "we'll go 50/50 but pay our contracts" was always garbage b/c you ran into a problem that the players' share of HRR wouldn't be sufficient to pay the contract $ they believed they deserved. but it also had the additional problem that it crowded out the addition of new contracts (i.e. from rookies/newly drafted players) unless the team was able to dump enough weight to accommodate it.

That is badass. From videos I've seen from crowds in Switzerland when it came to an up-and-coming player or when the Hawks played there, it seems as though those crowds are pretty awesome. Would like to go to a Swiss League game whenever I'm in Europe soon.

Encouraging stuff coming out of the meeting today, verbal agreement for owners to pay Make Whole provision, several players telling Fehrs to get a deal done and not talk to the media about it.

Hopefully both sides get together again and hammer out a deal. However as much as I want hockey back I want a deal where both sides give a little, both sides feel ok with and most importantly will bring stability to the league.

Looking at these Euro jerseys on NHL players is awful

Truly some of the worst abominations in sports being worn in Europe

It's a trade-off. We dont have these hideous "power breaks" over here, also, about 50% or more of the teams dont rely on wealthy "fans" (eventough most of the teams have something of their budget covered by indivuals, like almost all of the lockout signings for instance).

Six hours after the NHL and NHLPA resumed talks in New York, they're still going strong.

Hopefully this is good sign

It's a very good sign.

Good to see their finally getting into the meat of this whole thing, love the fact that their still meeting, that they are meeting on the big issues as reported, and that neither group will talk to the media about the specifics of whats being discussed, all good signs.

Reports are they will meet again tomorrow aswell.
