Also, there's not chance the NHL tries to compact an 82 schedule into 4 or 5 months if a deal is signed with that much time in the season. We may see a slightly compacted schedule, but it won't be that ridiculous.
Well, the new proposal is just that, 82 games crammed into 5 months. This is going to be so stupid, just cancel the damn 10 games, but no, the owners have to be greedy.

They NHL proposal is in the hope of saving an 82-game schedule. Peirre LeBrun already reported in September that the league would be willing to play into late-June (23rd-25th). So, if the NHL gets started before Nov. 2nd and played out the regular season until early May, it won't be that bad.

They should just cancel the games...playing that late is too much - the season already goes on too long - they'll still be playing after the official start of summer.

People are actually opposed to a shorter summer as hockey fans? Why?
Players are going to be dropping like flies. Not to mention, only 1 week of training for this whacked out schedule? I am sure they have done some preparation but come on, that just doesn't make any sense. Cut 8-10 games, give teams a little longer to prepare and we're good to go.

As for the compression of the schedule to get to 82 games, Bettman said it would include one extra game every five weeks per team.
That doesn't sound so bad. Of course, that's assuming the lockout ends by November 2nd, which it won't.
I'm having a difficult time seeing the players possibly saying no to this. This is the offer any objective fan figured would eventually happen - it's simply come much sooner than a lot of us were expecting from these pathetic two sides.
But we can never be sure, so I'll hold in the optimism until I hear something more than "excellent start" from Fehr.
I'm assuming with this new proposed rule, players playing overseas still don't have their contracts counted agains the cap (e.g. if Huet hadn't had his contract expire)? Maybe the Hawks could work something out there. Not sure Olesz wants to keep playing in the A, he might prefer Europe.
4 YRS ELC and 8 years until UFA are major issues. I don't see them accepting that.
Maybe, but personally I like the 4 year ELC.
We wouldn't have had to move Toews/Kane onto their current contracts in 2010 if they had 4 year ELCs, which would've obviously been a huge help in trying to keep that team together for at least one more year.
8 year UFA probably stems from the 4 year ELC. I don't think players like it, but I doubt they see it as a show stopper.
Either way at end of day we all know what will happen
Fehr/NHLPA will sadly throw away all progress by countering with a stupid split (Like 54% for PA). All progress will cease and NHL wont resume until 2013 or 2014
If that happens, then it's all on the players. Money is the main issue, if they accept that, then the other things will even themselves out and the deal will be done within a week.
I have no problem siding with the owners if the players reject this.
If they reject it, it's clear they just want more money, and could give a **** less about us fans
