re: all the fans scoffing at the idea of Edler being worth 6 mill/yr ... if MG is thinking along those lines get ready for him to be gone next July. I'd be more than happy to see him in Det for that figure - 25 year old 50pt dmen dont grow on trees. Yeah, he ***** the bed last playoffs, is inconsistent, and has had a few injuries - but hes already an elite player that still has upside that will likely be realized with a bit more maturity - his toolbelts already full.
Hakan wanted him first anyway ... dare to dream?

expect philly det to go big after him.
If the entire seasons lost he will hit UFA - no chance that deals get rolled back a year.

Unless the UFA age is moved later.

He will go for 5.5 and 5 yrs, I believe.

And of course, dmen take longer to develop, his inconsistent play and occasional cr*pping bed in PO series not unusual for a dman in nhl at his age..

Exactly! Wade Redden was just hitting his stride when he signed his deal... look how well that turned out!

Wasn't he already over 30 years old at the time he signed that deal? If so, hardly an applicable comparison.

And that $6 million Redden got was when the cap was much lower.

give him a deal that is as long as possible (max 10 year) if its at 6M or lower if the cap stays the same. Doughty Weber Suter guys of that ilk are getting 7M+ to get someone almost as good as them and around the same age for 1M+ cheaper is a great deal. Hell Weber and Suter probably would have gotten 8M+ if they werent signed til their 40s when they won't be worth the cap hit, example Gillis said the Canucks talked to Weber about an offersheet but the only one he saw that made any sense was a 1 year league max (10M+ cap hit I believe).

Redden had 47pts as a 23 year old and 50 at 28. I wasn't commenting on his deal so much, just the fact that progression isn't linear and doesn't necessarily happen with age.

Redden isn't the only example either. Our very own Jovo cop looked like he was well on his way to being a "Norris" type defensemen early in his career... he never really put it all together. You have to be careful when projecting what these guys will become.

Edler can become a stud defensemen, and I really hope he does, but it would be very presumptuous to say that he will.

If there's one thing I gather from you and y2k in this thread, it's that you think we're a better team without Edler at 5.5- 6 million, which is quite the ridiculous notion.

At that price range, we're not paying for a franchise defenseman. That market was set by Shea Weber and Ryan Suter at anything over 7 million. Right now, is Edler 1.5 million to 2 million worse than Suter and/or Weber? I'd say absolutely.

Edler isn't anywhere close to being the kind of player those two are.

And he won't be making anywhere near those two. Noone said they were on the same tier, which will reflect in the differences in their salaries soon.

Or we could use players on our team as comparables.

Okay, compare the years before being signed of our defencemen to Edler. To be slightly more accurate, compare the 2 years prior to the signing.

No, it's not. Marginal cost of "points" is not linear - not realizing that is how teams get in trouble.

Guys like Weber are worth far more than guys like Edler, and in turn they're both worth far far more than the next tier down.

How does Hamhuis/Bieksa's contract season compare to Edler's if Edler can duplicate the same numbers like last season?

I would need to look at the numbers. Bieksa had a huge playoffs before signing his extension though and I'm sure that played into his raise. Prior to that I don't think anyone had him over $4.25M.

You're suggesting he's close... he's not.

That's not what I said.

2 million is a pretty substantial difference, and I think that reflects the difference in skills between Edler and the other two defenseman

Would you rather have two Edlers, or one Weber? Me, I'd take one Weber.

Yes, if you prefer getting the lesser part of the deal.
