Players robbed of a proper send-off because of the '04-'05 lockout

The possibility of Selanne , Brodeur, Jagr and others retiring before a CBA can be reached got me thinking about this.

So far, all I can remember are Mark Messier and Al MacInnis.

Were there other notables?

Selanne wont retire, he'll come back with consecutive 90-point seasons because history repeats itself

Mark Messier. The guy is one of the top players of all-time. Shame that he had to retire during the lockout and not get a proper send-off.

While he retired a couple of weeks into the season, I'd add Brett Hull to the list.

Awards:
Vincent Damphousse. Signed with the Avs in '04 and never played another game due to the lockout.

Francis and Irbe.

Scott Stevens was contemplating returning before the lockout IIRC. Although you can never tell with concussions.

Larionov was 100% finished after 2004. No way he would've gotten any sort of NHL contract offer the following year

Messier got something of a sendoff from Ranger fans during the last day of the 2004 season

I think Ron Francis definitely plays another year if not for the lockout

Didn't he retire because of his actions during lockout negotiations?

Didn't Messier spear someone in the groin a few games before his last one?

Brett Hull is the first player to come to mind.

I thought MacInnis retired because of his eye not because of the lockout?

Felix Potvin seems like a guy who had a few good years left given his resurgence in LA, but the changing of the guards really left him with nowhere to play.

Sounds like a chippy, Messier play

though he def comes back for 04-05 if there is a season. Heck he was kicking around the idea to return for 05-06

it was the eye. In 2003 at 39 he scored 68 pts. His highest output since 1993-1994. He wasn't close to being finished

Yea, Messier would have been back in 04-05, at the end of the 03-04 season, he was 113 points away from 2000. If he had a healthy and productive season in 04-05, I'm sure he'd come back in 05-06 and make a run to 2000 career points.

Scott Stevens was planning on coming back in 2004-05 but said he realized how much he enjoyed spending time with his family during the lockout, so he retired.

Like someone upthread said, hard to tell with concussions

Could somewhat count Cechmanek, but he wasn't very good, just in a good system.

I keep a list sorted by last NHL game yr to order hockey cards for these notable players that are from their last season in 03/04 (or from after showing their career stats if it's ever made). This list is much longer if you include guys who tried to come back the following season but couldn't play the full yr:

Messier
Francis
Oates
MacInnis
Damphousse
Thomas S
Stevens
Ronning
Corson
Larionov
Reichel
Johansson C
Audette
Keane
Bure V
Jonsson K
Potvin
Morozov
Salo T
Tugnutt
Ragnarsson
Irbe

If anyone has a really cheap base hockey card for one of those guys bolded from their last career season or a card made for them after that which shows their NHL stats and doesn't want the card then let me know, thx.

Btw here's a mixed list of some guys who might potentially retire this time if full season lockout. MAY have played their last NHL game because they're either without a contract atm or by the end of the yr or have injury issues:
Alfredsson
Arnott
Blake
Brunette
Campoli
Cheechoo
Clark B
Conklin
Dvorak
Eaton
Hecht
Holmstrom
Huet
Hunter T
Huselius
Jagr
Jurcina
Knuble
Kostitsyn, Andrei
Kubina
Langkow
Martinek
Nittymaki
Pandolfo
Park
Poti (injury)
Pronger (injury)
Roloson
Rolston B
Rozsival
Savard (injury)
Selanne
Spacek
Sturm
Sykora
Turco
White C
Khabibulin, Aucoin, Gonchar all have contracts but are up there in age. Ohlund cos of injuries too.

These have already retired or aren't coming back from Europe I'd guess:
Lidstrom
Hagman
Moreau
Laperriere
Pahlsson
Madden
Staios

Messier speared Martin Strbek in the groin. He got a light suspension (2 games?) and this allowed him to play one or two more games to end the season. No doubt the light suspension was caused by Colin Campbell not wanting to have his old buddy finish his potential career in the press box. The late Wade Belak got 8 games for being careless with his stick and commented that if he were Mark Messier that suspension would be lighter. To be honest while Wade's incident looked accidental I truly believe he knew what he was doing to an extent and gave a little extra "mustard" on the swing.

I'd like to hear that story about Damphousse. I know he was on the NHLPA committee at that time. Linden was the player's overall rep. and there were a lot of awful things said about the classy Linden at that time just because of his position.

perhaps the more interesting question is which players don't qualify for an NHL pension due to one of the lockouts?
