I don't think the Sabres ever made that mistake again.

I haven't thought of anthem singer Joe Byron in decades. He always seemed a little tipsy before games.

He Sang at my grandfathers funeral. Not a dry eye in the house.

Love how the crowd used to buzz whenever Bert picked up the puck. Man, I miss that...

What I find fascinating is the Sabres blamed TV for not playing O Canada.

In 75-76 if the game was on TV in Buffalo it would have been on WKBW-TV. The Sabres were playing the Wings which was the USSR's second tier team so the game had little leverage in the US. ( The Red Army games were shown on a few US stations )

The game was an afternoon affair but while CBC carried the game in Canada, I doubt anybody outside of Buffalo in the US did and I doubt CBC would veto the Canadian anthem.

Perhaps it was USSR TV that blocked it?

I watched the Sabres in '75-76, and recall both this particular game, and their roster that season.

My thoughts re: anthem ommission are two-fold:

1) Broadcast agreement was 2.5 hours. If you look at the elapsed time, and add time for commercials, (16 minutes per hour is the USA norm, although this seems like a CBC broadcast, or certainly a non-Sabres TV broadcast), you get 2.5 hrs.

2) Broadcast contract (either the broadcaster, or the Challenge Series) stipulated 2 anthems, one each for the host countries.

It's clear from the introduction before the anthems the Sabres organization did not "make a mistake" by omitting the Canadian anthem - some higher obligation prevailed.

Obviously that was the case - but it never happened again.

The Sabres need the 'Niagara Township' to survive and with the dollar more or less at par now it is smooth sailing.

Buffalo's biggest headache is getting games on TV on the Ontario side. The old EMPIRE network was given a waiver by the CRTC to beam games into Ontario but MSG has been denied.
