CHL Arenas

I started a thread not too long ago wanting to know how many non-regulation rinks there are in the CHL. The QMJHL released their 2012-13 media guide yesterday, so I thought it would be worth my while to compile a list of the capacities and ice sizes of the CHL arenas for the sake of easy reference. Does anyone know how to make the columns sortable?

The OHL and WHL numbers are based on the 2011-12 media guides, and sadly are not as comprehensive as that of the QMJHL.

Anyway, here's what I found -

QMJHL

The 'Standing Room' figures are my own calculations

I honestly don't know how Val-d'Or claims to have so much standing room. I wonder if the 'upper bowl' seats at the one end are included in the 'Total Capacity' but not in the 'Seating Capacity.'

Thanks for this.

It is really interesting. I had a debate with a friend recently on the chances that Grande Prairie could have of hosting a WHL team. I said that until we get a rink that can hold 5000 people, its not even worth considering. My friend disagreed and said our rink would be suitable.

Looking at the list All the teams under the 5000 mark are either asking for a new rink (Medicine Hat) or struggling to survive (Swift Current, Prince Albert).

This list basically proves my point.

Wow, Saskatoon's rink has a slightly bigger capacity than the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. Did not know that.

3700 capacity for Val-d'Or seems off... The arena is pretty small lol.

add 1000 to Kitchener's, they are just finishing up a 1000 seat addition.

I think it has to do with fire regulations, and how many people they'll let in...

With that 'upper bowl' section at the one end, I'd believe that you can cram 3700 people in there.

I'm going to update the OHL and WHL when they release their media guides for this year.
