I get the feeling that if Crosby wanted to play specifically for Magnitogorsk, the KHL would bend the rules.

Doubt they could afford his insurance. But maybe ownership there would step up if they knew they'd have him until the end of the season.

But I think the entire country of Canada would have a seizure if Sid would play in Russia. It's silly, of course, but Canadian media is nothing if not irrational.
Yeah ... the Canadian media can be a little irrational. But, to be fair, the Russian media is a bit of a quagmire. Some of the sports sites are closer to 25Stanley than actual reporting.

Maybe the whole league would chip in a la Bobby Hull signing with the Jets in the WHA. Who knows. I think Crosby playing in the KHL would be such a coup for them in terms of worldwide exposure and legitimacy that they'd find a way.

If it gets Sid on the ice this year, hell, I'd chip in some cash. Been too long since people have seen him at his best.

Letang's temporary team doesn't use Cyrillic letters on the jerseys? Mother ****er. I would totally spring for a Летанг in that nice red, white, and blue.

Not more than 65% of his NHL salary by league rules.

Yeah. I realized that after posting when I started googling other teams. That honestly seems super lame to me.

The got rid of the cyrillic names a couple years ago when the league started expanding out of Russia. They want to be 'more accessible' to non-Russians.

65 % of his NHL salary, tax free. That's the maximum rule for lock out players.
For Ryan O'Reilly, who is a RFA with no contract, there is no such limit. But he signed for two years.
Of course with an NHL out clause if he is offered a more lucrative contract in Colorado.

I don't think it's tax free ... maybe one of the Russian posters can confirm this. I know Russia has a flat tax rate, and their salaries may be reported as net rather than gross but I'm pretty sure there's some sort of income tax being paid. There are agreements so people who work in one country but are not citizens aren't taxed twice, but tax does get collected. Also, the KHL doesn't publish salaries like the NHL does, so there's no way to know for sure, really.

There was an article in russian, it was stated there that contract can not exceed 65%, but it doesn't include bonuses. So, overall income of Covy, Obi, Malkin, Dats with bonuses can reach 10 mln$.
In this thread I gave link to that article
