If the league expands, there will be a draft where we can on;y "protect" a certain number of players. Who do we pick, assuming the last expansion draft rules (below) still apply?
The general rule is that each of the teams may protect 1 goalie, 5 defensemen, and 9 forwards, or they can protect 2 goalies, 3 defensemen, and 7 forwards. As far as minor league players go, first and second year pros (as well as unsigned draft picks) are exempt from the expansion draft.
Exempt NHL roster players: Smith, Josi, Ellis, Blum, Bourque (i think)
Since we only have 4 D that can be picked, the debate is pretty simple on who we keep (basically, it comes down to picking two of Hali/Spals/Goose to save), so let's make it tougher. 5F, 2D, 1G
My list, in order of priority: Erat, Fisher, Wilson, Legwand, Hornqvist, Weber, Klein, Rinne
Leaves SK, Goose, Spaling, Hali, Yip, McG, Gill, Hannan, and Mason to be drafted.
Personally, I wuld keep Gaustad over Halischuck, only because the effort from Halischuck is not consistant night after night and we have a tom of Halischucks in the system in latta, beck, watson (at this point) etc. We don't have many 6-5 faceoff dominant centers coming up.
