Not much from Lowry today, he had some nice defensive plays (seems pretty good with the pokecheck) and a nice hit.

Judging by the teams twitter feed it sounds like Trouba got at least one assist off a team mate scoring on a rebound from one of his shots.

Edit: Guess stats are up after all

Trouba: 2 primary, 1 secondary assists, and 2nd star. Good start.

What do you guys think of this article?
They have Schiefele ranked at 32. That seems awfully low to me.

Agreed. I'd like to see the top thirty before j pass judgement but I'm going to assume a lot of his drop has to do with shiny toy syndrome ( a disproportionate amount of 2012 draftees in the top thirty)

Of course, that assumption is more my inner homer then anything else...

They docked him for his slump after the WJC and for his play in the AHL playoffs. I didnt like the effort they put into his ranking, its like they looked at the stat sheet and drew conclusions. Had they done some research they word have figured out that his AHL ice time was being purposely held back by the team. Also I thought there were some mentions of him suffering an injury during the WJC whichay have caused some of his slump. I'm also not happy on how they made no mention of how he developed away from the puck. Not happy with how he was ranked at all, but these things don't mean much of anything.

Also keep in mind there's going to be a heavy "viewing" bias.

Essentially, whoever was watched/followed more closely and is new (sexier) is going to get a high ranking- regardless of whether they are actually being "compared" to those who drop. those Player will "make sense" as top 30 etc players if you don't compare to those you've pushed out.

ex:
I know A is a 5 but B could be 3-7 therefore i will place b after A.

also i really dislike how no one seems to correct for the "shiny toy" syndrome. These new draftees that are just soooo great are only ranked higher because they haven't had the opportunity to disappoint/temper expectations yet.

in short your right, it seems pretty poorly done. Nothing mentioned that couldn't have been inferred by the stat sheet (skating improvement, two way play, etc), only "he scored more goals, thus his goal scoring touch improved!" "he didn't score very much in the second half, therefore his conditioning or consistancey is bad!"

Disclaimer: my views are colored by fan-dome.

I agree. What an absolute joke this list is shaping out to be. They seem to like the 2012 draftees the more than the rest, just like every year. If anything Scheifele should have kept the same spot. It's understandable for him to slip a little bit (in 15-20), but that's way too much.

Scheifele has improved so much since his draft year. He went from being a big scoring forward who didn't engage enough, to being a physical scoring forward. He has just as much potential as anyone, and if he doesn't reach it his size and style of game will help him solidify a spot in the NHL. The knock I can think about is the major tournaments (where apparently they only saw him play) where he didn't produce.

Right now I'd say he's a better prospect than Ryan Strome. The final ratings haven't come out yet, but Strome is obviously going to be in top 30, and Scheifele should be ahead of him.

Note: I'm a Barrie Colts fan, so take it for what you will.

Have to admit I'm enjoying watching NCAA...

Also, I'm quite jealous of their better and more detailed stat keeping than the CHL...
They record shots and face-offs If only they did TOI and it be perfect for running advance stats. Then you'd get a real good picture of how your prospects are doing.

I'm watching the 2009 world Jr's semis on TSN right now, and Pierre Mcguire is talking about how good of a player Patrice Cormier is, and how he's going to be an amazing NHLer. Was this tourney before he was suspended? I'm no PM fan, but what happened to Cormier? Or is it the typical prospect hype that never materializes?

Ryan Olsen with a pair of goals yesterday to bring him up to 5 in 8 games.

Interested to hear any analysis from those who have watched him play ( especially this year ) . From what I have read , he is very responsible defensively and gets tough minutes against top lines. He also is getting PP time this year and so far he has been scoring . Good size too , been in the league a number of years and appears he may be in for close to a 40 goal , PPG season , which to me elevates his longer term potential.

Pros:
*wins faceoffs - his NHL record is 61/97
*gritty but draws more penalties than he takes - 10 hits/60mins; penalties drawn/60:taken/60 2010-1.5:0.3, 2011-1.0:0.0
*some offensive upside - 3rd highest pts/gp on the IceCaps last year
*plays well both sides of the ice
*can play all 3 forward positions

The knacks against him are:
*slow skating at pro-level
*not much offensive upside

He's basically a solid bottom 6 guy... a younger and bigger Slater

The Kelowna Rockets were high on him and were hoping to shape their 2 year rebuild around him. They traded their top scoring forward for a 2nd, 5th and him.
He spent his last two years without much opportunity being stuck behind Sutter in Saskatoon's depth charts. Ironically most scouts felt that he had more tools than Sutter.
In February some people threw together a combining of Bob McKenzie, Redline Report, Future Considerations, ISS, Craig Button, Hockey Prospectus, The Scouting Report, and Win Shares:
NamePos
Trouba 8
Kosmachuk 40
Olsen 63
Sutter 90
So Olsen could be quite the steal in the late rounds.

Also, interesting to see that Chevy went for one person who basically stayed stationary (Trouba), two that were fallers (Kosmachuk and Olsen) and one riser (Sutter).

Thanks for the reply.

I concur with Cormier's review. One thing to remember , is he seems to be viewed or seen as an older player and he really isn't. He brings a lot of NHL skills to the table and I think that is what PM was alluding too. If he ever improves his skating he could be a very effecient and effective bottom 6 player imo. I fully expect him to play up with Wpg. by next year at the latest.

Olsen will be interesting to follow this year, he flashed some impressive hands and skill in a few video hi lites I have seen. Still very young and years away but he should be counted on to play a few years in the AHL and may indeed have the requisite game that lands him in the NHL in several years.

Ya think?

Have heard him call a few games already this year. Try to catch them when they are on the road. The first time I heard him scream out against a near silent background it actually scared me a bit; wondered if he was having a medical emergency or something.

Mac Bennett from a D-to-D pass off the tape of Trouba. 2-0 Wolverines with another 1:19 on the PP!
He's got a penalty in this game already as well.

And Troba nets his first Wolverine goal in SPECTACULAR fashion with a wraparound PPG!
Obviously small sample size but it's nice to see him putting up some points.

Photo of Yasin Cissť from last Sunday against UToronto. He seems pretty good in front of the net, and he got a five-minute major and game misconduct for roughing.

Start of the 2nd - Barrie scored, but goal was waved off. Saginaw pulls their goalie anyway - score still 4-1.

EDIT: scratch that - officially 5-1 now. Hall on the PP. This could be a white-washing.
EDIT2: 2 minutes later, Strome scores. 5-2 Barrie now. This could be an interesting game.

6-3: Scheifele with the primary assist. Game is a bit loose and crazy.

Zoinks: 6 mins left in the 3rd, and Saginaw has made it 7-5 Barrie. Game feels like a pre-season romp, not a regular season game. Athanasiou has a hattrick for Barrie.

EDIT: Hahaha! Biggest hit of the game was Camara and Scheifele running into each other. These teams should be wearing clown shoes tonight.

EN goal makes it 8-5 final.

There's video on the Michigan site with some highlights from the game last night.

Trouba's scoring play starts at 2:35.
