When you break it down, how well someone does now in Junior, which has a certain system and style, won't always translate.

Many things can cause this and it's not uncommon for say player 'A' to be currently better than 'B', but 'B' is the only one that goes on with a successful career:
  • certain styles may translate to the higher level better
  • a huge problem with looking at development with Junior stats is that sooo much context is missing... there's no sh%/shots to see if someone's scoring was inflated, no TOI to see if someone is scoring more just because they are on the ice more, no way to gauge quality of competition to see if the person is lining up against the best (power vs power) or weak 3rd/4th liners (power vs checking), no way to tell how much of the person's stats are inflated by o-zone starts, PP and quality of better line-mates, etc.
  • A may be better than B but closer to plateauing
  • certain skills are fixable and can be developed while some are just natural; A may be better than B in the fixable skills but the natural ones will never come to him
  • it's ignored but politics can have a huge influence to; better oppertunities to develope
  • slightly off topic, but in my stats course we went over how in every major sport there is a higher percentage of players in the Pros who have birthdays early and closer to cutoff ages in minor leagues; the theory is they are older so more developed when they first start the sport, so they are better and get better developmental oppertunities

I always use this as an example:
I love our prospect Kosmachuk; I think he's guaranteed to be a mid-round gem for us... but, he scored almost the same amount as Yakupov yet every scout knows there is a huge difference in potentials.
Yes, that early birthday theory was popularized by Malcolm Gladwell in his book, Outliers, along with the notion that 10,000 hours was necessary for excellence in any field, from hockey to violin. You would love the book, if you haven't yet read it.
The early birthday notion is not quite right for players in Junior, however, because any player who has made it that far has, years earlier, been selected out as elite and has received better coaching, etc.
There is a chapter in the book correlating the impact of culture and family on success that is very interesting. It compares two brilliant men, one of whom was from a supportive family and the other from a highly dysfunctional one. Guess who succeeded? When i look at a guy like Scheifele, what I see is 'character', but what I think is 'good upbringing'. Lucky him.

Ya I've wanted to read that for a long while and ya that's why I said slightly off topic haha

Don't want to flood this thread with my own posts so I'll just add this to here:
Lowry has been selected for both games for WHL's Subway Super Series team. (wasn't too much of a surprise since Mr. Lowry is coaching the team haha)
So, we'll have Scheifele playing one game and Lowry playing two games.

Sure kosmachuk scored similar goal and assists as Yakupov...but Yakupov had 25 less games to put up those numbers

Trouba excites @ChildrenOfYost but ends up in the box after a huge hit at the Michigan blueline. Interference is the call.

Guptill slams home a juicy rebound all alone out front and Michigan tries to pull away: 4-2 with 7:45 left. Initial shot: Trouba of course
Just keeps sounding better and better, he has 2 assists in this game so far.

Love it. Developing both his offensive game, and his nastiness. In future, if one of Bogo or Trouba could play the off hand, that would be one nasty pairing.

Keep your head up.

Small consolation: U of Michigan is pretty good about putting up highlights.

It's quite early in the season still, but it seems to me that the Jets' prospect pool is looking a lot more positive with a lot more upside now than it did a few months ago.

Some positive signs that are emerging...

Scheifele seems to be maturing and continuing progress towards being a good top 6 player with good character.

Telegin seems likely to make a good transition to the pros, and is giving signs of potential to be a good NHL-level player.

Kosmachuk and Olsen look like they have good potential for eventually making it in the NHL.

Lowry has taken a step forward this year as a leader with a lot of grit and some scoring potential.

Trouba seems to be asserting himself as a top line defenceman with toughness and high upside. It is very early, but there are some signs that he could be a home run. It seems that in last night's game he was an impact player (two assists, +1, physical game) against the #3 team in NCAA hockey. That sort of proficiency is rare for a Freshman, especially this early in the season.

Pretty sure Kevin Cheveldayoff was impressed with the big hit as much as the 2 assists. Nice to play well when the boss is in the house to watch you .

We've built the prospect pool nicely and this draft should elevate that significantly. The top picks are playing like top picks and some of the mid round picks look to be trending up nicely. Very nicely.

Go to the the open area, nice quick shot release, good thinking and at speed as well. Great goal.

While we did pass on Forsberg, who is posting decent stats himself.

It's looking like the Trouba pick was still exceptionally good. Both players are looking good in there own right, but as long as we took an impact player, I really don't care who it is.

He has shown he can score goal scorer goals , is scoring at a solid pace for games played , can play defense and has size already and will get bigger. Hard to see how he slipped to his draft spot , but glad he is our prospect.

Uh-oh. Looks like Serville could be injured:

Awesome.

I'd also like to see his fight with Laurencelle. I'd think Lowry wins by height advantage alone as Laurencelle is only 5'9".

Bought the game feed online; was cringing the entire fight... just thinking about Lowry's wrist surgery last season. Your description of the fight was pretty accurate BTW.

EDIT: The wheels just fell off the Broncos the past few minutes, now down 4-1. Now another fight just broke out following a goal. Crazy game. The Broncos have hung their goalie out to dry.

EDIT: Yet another fight! Insane.
