WoWzErs! 34 penalties, for a total of 152 PM. Quite the dust-up. EDIT: shots on goal were interesting too. 50-23 in favour of Lethbridge.

Anyone watch the Michigan highlights? No replay of Trouba's big hit, but it did show a couple of really poor turn-overs on his part.

Yea I have noticed in all the highlight packages so far is Jacob is prone to one or two forced or unforced turnovers per game and that's just in the highlights we see. In fairness he isn't alone on the Michagan team, they appear to play pretty open. it's good he has this time in collage hockey to work on all aspects of his game especially when his team doesn't have the puck.

However he has significantly exceeded my expectations When their team has possession. He looks very good carrying the puck out of his zone or on the attack, head up under control, and really fast. Similar to the turnover thing in every game they show Trouba has one or two great stretch passes (Phil Housley style) where he springs a team mate on a break away (or partial). He has a nose for the offense jumping into the play and is not scared to do it. His one timer shot is beautiful. to me he looks physically imposing and mature already, not awkward at all. I wish I could see a full game to watch his D zone coverage but when I watched him on the US junior team he was really good in this area.

On balance I am thrilled with what I am seeing. In the new NHL I can count the number of big, "MEAN", mobile, punishing defensman with offensive ability on one hand. Chara, Weber, Phaneuf and a few more. Trouba says he models his game after Weber and I saw Shea play at the same age and they are pretty similar so one can dream

ps241: I definitely agree that the aspects of his game that are difficult or not possible to teach (his skating, his physical nature, and his offensive skills) are the reason we should be salivating regarding his potential for the Jets in future.

The unforced turn-overs are most likely just an age thing: he's still 18, and has some learnin' to do. I'm sure it'll come with time and maturity.

His skating skills are amazing - if he were a lefty, pairing him with Bogo a few years from now would create a really punishing shut down d-line that could also contribute offensively. I'd hate to have to go into the corners with those two.

Unforced turnovers are a knock on a lot of good young defensman, including Bogo at that age. This will come with experience and maturity. In 4-5 years I see Bogo as the anchor on the first unit and Trouba as the anchor on the second.

[...]
It's the big knock on Red Berenson.

After Jack Johnson, fans are always up in arms if he's coaching their defensemen prospects.

I didn't actually see that part of the game... but he had a major for slashing, which automatically comes with a game misconduct, and that means either one of two things:
1) he slashed someone with severely enough or with obvious intent that the referee believed it deserved a major
or
2) an injury resulted from the slash

The game was very rough with multiple fights and apparently dirty. The Guelph coach after the game accused the other team of diving and faking injuries.

Between Trouba's big hit, Lowry's fight, and Kosi's suspension it was a feisty weekend for our prospects. Throw is Sutter's natural edge and we appear to be stocking our cupboards with guys who don't back down.

Wasn't much shown and they didn't show a replay of the slash during the game. Kosmo got hit and as the guy was skating away he slashed the guys' leg. Might be more to it but as I saw it I think the 5 games is a bit overkill.

nice article on our boy Mark in the sun:

I liked this part in that he is focused on his current team.

"We have a good team here. Personally, it's been going really good," Scheifele said in a recent telephone interview from Barrie, Ont. "I've been able to play with good players like Zach Hall and Anthony Camara and we have good chemistry on our team. We're definitely going to continue to get better each and every week."

also big picture:

"I've matured a lot physically and mentally," said Scheifele, who had a career-best six-point game against the Ottawa 67s earlier this month. "I've learned a lot over the last year and went through a lot of things, how to deal with ups-and-downs and that's a big thing in becoming a pro hockey player.
"Last year was an unbelievable ride and it was one of the funnest times of my life, being in Winnipeg."

Scheifele is eager for another shot to crack the Jets' roster, but his thoughts aren't dominated by thoughts of the lockout or when it might end.

"I try to keep it out of my mind as much as possible," said Scheifele. "I don't have any control over it and I hope they can work something out. If they do, I'm ready and raring to go.

"You have to look at the positives. I get to develop here and I have somewhere to play hockey and I'm able to better my game, get stronger and bigger and more ready to sustain an NHL season."

and lastly a bit of that competitive spirit:

Scheifele has already been chosen to suit up for the OHL in the Subway Series against Russia and he's expected to be invited for the world junior camp in December as well.

He wants to bring home a different colour medal this time around.

"Getting the bronze left a bitter taste in my mouth," said Scheifele. "I want to make that team and do whatever it takes to win the gold. That's my goal."

http://www.winnipegsun.com/2012/10/2...-stride-in-ohl

Hawerchuk was being interviewed the other day on the Rona Round table and he mentioned that some of the other coach's and GM's in the OHL have told him there are some disgruntled players in the league that want to be playing in the NHL right now and are kind of coasting. When they asked Dale about Scheif he said "No, not Mark you never have a problem with Mark's attitude and effort".
