Apparently the 2 year/$5 million deal hasn't been confirmed yet? http://onthewingsblog.com/2012/09/12...ting-on-carlo/. I haven't seen any of the major blogs (or either the official Red Wings site or Blues site) report this yet.

Andy Strickland was the source over on the main board, pretty plugged in with the Blues. In any event I have yet to see a Wings person confirm this.
Kubina is kind of trending down but I would have prefered that over Carlo now that Rozsival is off the market. He is at least a big right-handed shot, plus he likes to head hunt Bolland.
Really, he is a decent defenseman. You guys are acting all doom and gloom over this, its a definite upgrade on defense. The worst part about this is the fact he will probably get injured.
CC is an upgrade over whom?
Kronwall? Quincey? White? Ericsson? Smith? Kindl?
We basically just made Kindl the #7 defenseman ... and we did that to sign a mediocre defenseman.
Par for the course.
I don't mind letting prospects rot if you sign Marian Hossa or Brian Rafalski
but when you sign mediocre cast-offs like Sammy and CC... it's actually subtraction by addition in my book

I do think Sammy can still play, but I mostly agree.
Holland **** the bed this off-season, there's no way to put a positive spin on this without kidding yourself.
Sammy, Bert (extension), Tootoo & now CC? So unless the younger guys play significantly better than the vets @ camp, they are going to rot in the AHL for another year...
Nyquist, Tatar, & Kindle should be everyday players until they prove they aren't capable of it. This is getting ridiculous, we need some young talent in our lineup yet we keep signing vets who are little to no improvement.
What other options did we have at this point? Ya, a big bruiser Stuart-type would have been nice but for whats available Im ok with taking a chance on CC. Hes a 30ish point dman who typically logs 50-60 games a year ... if he stays healthy he should approach 40. If not, all the more chance for Kuba to get development opportunities.
If we are cleary too small and weak on defense and they arent producing offensively I could see a trade of some kind happening for a guy like Regehr or D Murray later in the year. Carlo can skate and pass the puck ... and we just lost the best guy in the world at that - so Im not going to panic just yet.
Kronwall White
Quincey Ericsson
Coliacovo Smith
*if they all play at our close to their best this is a pretty decent d-core. Comparable to Vancouver IMO ... no Norris winners, but 3 sets of guys that would likely fit on most teams 2nd pairing. Onus to make this group competitive will be on Kronwall to hit that next level and Brendan Smith to make a quick transition obviously.
After this signing, we have to trade one puckmoving defenceman to defensive guy, or push some puckmoving to mainly defensive "Stuart" role.
Could that be Quincey?
Ian White and Colaiacovo are not PK defencemen, so the others have to be.
Even strength hierarchy:
Kronwall
Ericsson
Quincey
White
Smith
Colaiacovo
(Kindl)
PK hierarchy:
Ericsson
Kronwall
Quincey
Smith
White
(Kindl)
Colaiacovo
PP hierarchy:
Kronwall
White
Colaiacovo
Quincey
Smith
(Kindl)
Ericsson
So is the plan to push Smith and Quincey to a more defensive role, to get the best total effort out from defence (using White and Cola on the power-play) ?
We have to split those minutes somehow, there isn't any defenceman who can play +25 minutes a night. Mainly everybody is going to play near 20 minutes, except Kronner 25. And that 25 minutes is maximum for Kronwall.
PP hierarchy:
Kronwall
White
Colaiacovo
Quincey
Smith
(Kindl)
Ericsson
That's where Smith will probably actually be on that list, I agree. But you forgot Samuelsson He'll probably be after White. The righty on the 2nd pair. Quincey and Cola (if we actually sign him, I still haven't seen a link) will battle it out for 2nd pair lefty. Smith will just have to focus on his ES game and wait his turn.

If Quincey isn't on your second unit... what good is he?

I agree with the first suggestion. Not the second. You can't just turn an offensive defenseman with defensive issues into your defensive defenseman.
If we can trade Quincey and a prospect and forward for a bonafide first pairing RD with a righthanded shot -- even if said defenseman is overpaid ... I think that helps us a lot

Good grief. I'd forgotten. It's like ripping off a scab. Thanks, jaster.
