Must win tonight for NYRB. Weak team at home must equal 3 points. At this point, the playoffs are not a certainty. Need a win tonight with 3 tough games to end the season after this.

Not a good start for United, they're getting bossed in the midfield and once again, the passing is sloppy. RVP went down with an injury but he's back up.

He's been poor in possession... isn't finding space without the ball AND isn't making runs to open up Van Persie... contributes nothing to the high end of midfield when United don't have the ball has the ball which has been a huge problem (especially since our Carrick/Scholes/Giggs/Nani midfield is so slow)... And, he has been getting muscled off the ball consistently all season.

Tactically there is far too much space between the midfield and forwards. In Kagawa's role in the first half, he needs to show for the ball and exploit the space between Tottenham's defense and midfield. He was sticking way too high which is why our buildup always stopped flowing once it got to our center mids in their half, and why we had to end up hoofing the ball in rather than playing it to feet (the strength of our lineup).

Some of that may be Fergie's doing, but when I see the way Wellbeck and Rooney drop into the high end of the midfield while playing a similar role to Kagawa, I have to think it's the player rather than the instruction.

There we go, great service from Rooney. Friedel would like to have that one back but I'll take it.

Scholes pulled an "Atlanta Kovalchuk" on that one... Didn't track back to take the extra man.

LMAO what is going on in this game? Kagawa, my favorite. <3

He's not playing mid, he's playing striker.

He was playing in a free 10 role. You're not a striker and you're not a midfielder when you're a 10, but you're expected to contribute in both areas.

Notice that Rooney is now in the 10 spot and is dropping back to show for passes from Carrick/Scholes consistently... And while the play isn't as direct as it was in the first half, it allows us to get bodies forward rather than having to play off of crosses exclusively. Kagawa simply plays too high when he plays that role. Hopefully he'll fix it because he's obviously talented, but tactically it hurts the team a lot when there's no middle link-up man.
