Why so little love for Patrik Elias?

He'll be the 5th Devil to have his number retired, and that's all that matters to us NJ fans. Not many guys can claim to have an assist on a double-OT Stanley Cup winning goal

That's what happens when you steal pucks.

I agree that Elias is often forgotten as one of the top wingers in the league. He did an admirable job moving from his preferred LW position to C in the absence of Zajac, and he put up very respectable numbers in the process. I think part of why he isn't more talked-about around here is that he's so quiet and doesn't seem to enjoy the spotlight. Devils fans would know more about his personality than I do, but I recall he was a bit uncomfortable with the captaincy in NJ and appears happier to be a quiet veteran leader on his team. What I do know for sure is that as a Flyers fan, Patrik Elias scares me more than any other Devil...he kills us.

3) Behind flashier stars for most of his career. Brodeur, Stevens, Parise, Kovalchuk, etc.
4) Generally liked by the league, does not create controversy.

Basically see Ron Francis
Exactly this. Ron Francis didn't even make the list of "10 best playmakers of all time" (can't remember where that list was) despite being 2ND ALL TIME IN ASSISTS.

Because he steals Stanley Cup game-winning pucks and lies about it.

Nothing against Neal, but having him on a line with Malkin is driving his point totals. Elias is better than Neal.

Because it's against the non-existant rules to like a player from a rival team.

Well tbh, how many people here really care about pre-lockout? I know I do because my team was relevant. I meant to add that the Devils in general are an overlooked team but most people knew who Elias was but he was never thrown in among the top forwards for whatever reason. Maybe it's because whenever someone would mention the Devils you have some ignorant fool who's immediate response is "Trap! I hate that damn trap! rabble rabble!

Essentially, ya. We still have to deal with that nonsense, we didn't leave it behind after the lockout. Ignorant fools still tell me that the Devils trapped their way to the Cup Final, even though that's not remotely true.

And Devils fans have fond memories of the NHL before the lockout too. That's when our team was wining Cups.

I would have thrown the puck into the Passaic river if it was up to me.

Elias once had an assist so filthy it brought Bill Clement to spontaneous climax.

His own fans only ever talk about one player on their team.

I know it's typically unheard of with players like Marty and Stevens on the team, but he's always been my favorite.

People always ask where the Devils will be without a guy like Zach or without Marty... but I don't want to think about the absence of Elias on the team.

When things got a bit tough in the 1st round this season, the younger guys let it slip that it was Elias that they listened to when he spoke up and they expressed how much respect they had for his lockerroom leadership.

Because that was the night Marty won his 552nd game.
Pretty much says it all.

As Patty goes, so go the Devils. That has been true for years.

Got a lot of subtlety to his game. You have to look really close to appreciate what he does. Also, he disappeared for a little while during his prime (hepatitis?) and people wrote him off (wrongly).

He was out with hepatitis A for the first half of the 2005-06 season. When he came back, he was on fire, leading the Devils to the playoffs and the division championship. I don't think it's fair to say he disappeared.

His statline that season was remarkable.

38 GP, 16G, 29A, 45Pts in the regular season.
9 GP, 6G 10A 16Pts in the playoffs.
