DHO = director of hockey operations, for people like me who did not immediately know what that stood for.

No fan knows. Not one fan has any idea what these people do. Anyone happy or upset about this is merely blowing smoke.

If he's the one that plucks guys out of the ECHL for the Texas Stars he deserves it, did a great job down there. If not, then um, what Troy said. I have no idea what this guy does.

He is a talent evaluator. I've seen a few different articles or tweets mentioning him scouting a game or player. Thats clearly not his only responsability but I think its safe to say he plays a role in targeting current AHLers and other minor pro players.

I thought Provenzano was the AGM? Or is that what the DHO is? I'm not too informed on those positions.

He was.

A lot of this is just semantics and whatever they want to call the titles.

Before, the assistant GM position was "split" into 2, with Provenzano holding the AGM - Hockey Ops title and Jackson with AGM - Scouting and Development. There was no Director of Hockey Ops previously. Provenzano took care of the traditional assistant GM responsibilities like paperwork, contracts, calculating cap space, trade calls, coordination with CP, etc. Jackson had more of an advisory role and obviously focused on the draft and the prospects in the system. The AGM in front of his name was more to soften the blow of when he was removed from the co-GM position IMO.

Actually what might be bigger news is Churla leaving the org. and joining the Habs. He did a great job for the Stars out in the WHL. Deserves a lot of credit for bringing guys like Dillon into the fold.

Wasn't he based out of Minnesota. I know he did some Western scouting as well (IIRC he was the one they used for Curtis McKenzie quotes), but Dennis Holland is probably the main Western guy from what I've read.

EDIT: Regardless of his exact location, I think many of the key people covering the West are still in place. Plus, many within the organization are Western Canadians. That influence is definitely much larger than just a single guy.

The article below is from two years ago. So I don't know if the link works anymore.

I assume Churla was in Wisconsin for the USHL playoffs. So I'd imagine Churla is based out of Montana. He probably scouted the USHL fairly often since it's very close and Western Canada.

Quote:
Former North Stars enforcer Shane Churla was arrested Wednesday in Eau Claire, Wis., on charges stemming from an alleged road-rage incident. The 51-year-old Churla, who lives in Big Fork, Mont., and works as a pro scout for the Dallas Stars, was charged with criminal damage to property and disorderly conduct -- two misdemeanors. He appeared in court and was released on $200 cash bond.
