Byfuglien on his weight: "Hey you guys try not eating every second when you've got 4 stomachs".

What he is doing is very unhealthy. Do you only care about the player or about the person behind the player?

Let's be honest, "I’m right around the same" means he has put on weight. I also doubt 265 was an accurate measurement for where he was last season. Here's a pic from the article:

Looks like he's shed some weight since Bolland's wedding, but he still looks pretty overweight. I'm sure he can play hockey at a high level regardless, he's very strong and has a huge frame so he can carry all that weight better than most, but pretty much all other NHLers clearly put a lot more effort into their fitness. He's being paid $5.2 million per year to play hockey, has access to excellent personal trainers and nutritionists whenever he wants, you would think he'd feel more responsibility to keep himself in tip top shape so he could perform at the highest level possible.

To anyone saying he plays well enough in his current state, I have a question for you.

Is this the best he has to offer?

Yeah, he's a good hockey player, helps his team win games...etc. He's being paid millions of dollars to do a job. He does his job, but I don't think it's to the best of his ability. I think he owes it to the organization, his teammates, and his fans to do what it takes to be the best player he can be.

He does play hockey a high level. Buff's not exactly an unknown quantity at this point.

Seems like that is the point to me. Keeping your weight under control/slimming down (not yo-yoing) gets you in better shape which in theory means you can play better. It sure as hell can't hurt. Keeping that up health over time will extend how long you can perform at a high level. If he keeps like this in his 30s, almost a guarantee that when that inevitable physical decline happens, it will happen quicker to him.

A lot of people seem so damn sensitive about this. Sure, he's a damn good player (offensively), but admitting that he could possibly be better if he kept in better shape is not being a bad fan. It's being honest.
I really don't care what the guy does about his weight, that's his business. Just saying there are legit reasons to say losing weight would be helpful.

I see the photoshopped version of the wedding pic has now become the real wedding pick. Ah, the internet.

It's all fun and games now, but what is concerning to me is that as he ages it will be harder and harder to keep that weight off and snap back into playing shape. If he keeps up this habit, he could see his career cut shorter than he'd like.

He's always been fat, even in Prince George it was talked about, I think he's just naturally a fat dude, which is fine. But he does have to watch himself as it gets harder as you age. He'll be looking at knee issues, back issues etc.

yea, I tried to point that out earlier...I'm fairly sure that photo isn't a normal photo, looks stretched or through a fisheye lens or something....remember a lot of people agreeing with that when it first came out

nice real world example of how false truths and speculation can just become history and fact

Buff is a pretty fantastic offensive defenseman. Not sure why anybody but Winnipeg fans would ever be concerned about his weight, and even they shouldn't be if he plays the way he's played up until now.

How do we know this?

You can state "I don't care how fat he is. He's still a good player."

But, like any other human being, the faster you are the more effective he would be. The fitter he was, the more effective he would be. The stronger he he is, the more effective he would be.

It's not a question of him sucking. He's clearly effective, even being overweight.

But if he dropped some weight, he'd likely be that much faster. If his cardio endurance was better, he'd likely be more effective at the end of his shift.

This will come back to bite him in the butt in more ways than one. He will likely have a shortened career because of it. And, if he can't stay in shape as a pro athlete being paid millions to do so, he will be 400 pounds within 10 years of retirement.

Good player. Could be a great player.
Lacks professionalism, anyway you slice it.

Send a message via AIM to LAX attack*
As a fat person myself, I strongly approve of this message. not only can he throw crushin checks but more importantly he is able to put up 50 points in that kind of condition. I mean does a dude really have to change his body if he can do tha as a professional athlete? it's almost unbelieveable to be honest

If he's overweight and still is a pretty good player imagine how he would be in shape?

Or he could be significantly worse...

I know plenty of fat people and they always lie about their weight.

Buff is at best 6'3 and atleast 275. when a fat person tells you there weight, add atleast 10 pounds, probably 15

He averaged 24 minutes of icetime per game last year. I don't think the weight is affecting his cardio. Back problems are more likely as he ages due to the weight though. For example, Bertuzzi used to have recurring back problems and he had to drop a ton of weight.
