It was still CP's scouting staff & I think Shero himself said that in an interview. I actually get the impression that the scouting team has a large degree of autonomy from Shero.

The idea that Shero had to lean almost entirely on the scouts for input for the 2006 draft doesn't hold much water for me. I mean he was the right-hand man in Nashville, it's not like he was picked up off the streets. There's little doubt to me that he spent a decent amount of time talking to Predators scouts and the like in preparation for the Predators draft that year. Yeah he was at a bit of a disadvantage since he wasn't used to working with the Pens scouts but it's extremely unlikely that he went into the draft blind.

I meant that to be more of a question.
I can't remember a link but I read it several times that Shero didn't have much of an input in that draft as he had just been hired and was defaulting (after the Staal pick) to the old scouting staff that was still in place. It's also how Moulson slipped through our hands. Didn't mean to blame Shero 100% for the pick but IMO it's the biggest blunder since he became GM. Well, until Pouliot.

A prospect camp or two is not going to make a guy an expert on a system that is as intricate as one that the Pens play.
This can't be overstated. Pretty much everyone who comes here (rookie or veteran) comments on how different the system is, and acknowledges how hard it was for them initially. We've seen first-hand how Michalek, Martin, and Neal struggled.

Dylan Reese scored on a backdoor play on the PP, assists to Dupuis & Dumoulin

1-0

Megna making season debut, playing for 4th line with MacIntyre, Payerl

Sounds like Niederreiter blew by Reese and scored

1-1

Im really liking dumoulin! hes been rock-steady the 2-3 games ive seen. Had a solid 1st period now as well. We might have something there! Megna has good speed! lets hope he moves up the lineup. im not sure Sid would even create chances with Mcintyre on his wing...

Paul Thompson is having himself a good game with 2 goals. I Really wish I could see this game. Also Grace is talking Bennett up a bit it sounds like.

Thompson scores 2 in a row. 1st one a SNIPE! 2nd one a bit weak from the goalie. 3-1 wbs half the game played.

I had high hopes for Thompson after we signed him. Word was that he did most of his work from the slot in, and has a great shot. I hope he works out.

Thompson with the natural hat trick! And Despres had a fight with Hamonic. Looking forward to the game highlights.

Yes. Hamonic crashed the crease and Despres grabbed him and said "let's go"

Not sure why Grace is talking up Bennett. Hasn't done anything today. And he's still getting bullied off of the puck

Nevermind.

How has Dumoulin done so far? Errr Looked. I can look up stats like the next guy. Anyone watch him with WBS? Give some insight... Have him in two keeper leagues and have followed him since he was a Canes prospect years back. He's my favorite and IMO the best prospect we have in the system.

Ive seen 3 games so far. Hes looking as solid as it gets. Dont notice him much, but somehow he quietly puts up some points as well (2 more so far tonight). Nothing flashy but always seem to make the right play. Really good defensively, good outlet pass as well.
Being used on the PP right now, but i dont see him being the go to guy on the PP. Maybe 2nd unit material.

I like that Despres fought Hamonic. Good stuff. Dumoulin sounding like an NHL-ready guy, which we were expecting as part of the reason Shero asked for him. Hopefully he keeps it up. If we get a real season maybe we'll get 10 or 15 games worth of a look.

Paul Thompson, like Michel Ouellet has been a strong scorer at every lower level. Has decent size like Ouellet. Not that I am comparing them beyond that. Maxim was a serviceable NHLer for a few years. Just curious if Thompson has the type of skillset that could be that of a serviceable (that word again!) complimentary winger to one of our top 3 lines, or is he just a career minor leaguer. I don't see these games, so I can't go much more beyond the little stuff I can go on the net.

I love his big body, long reach, IQ... watched snippets of his game from the NCAA and read up lots about him. Was ecstatic when I found out he was coming to us in the Jordan Staal trade. I was probably one of VERY FEW people who felt that was the most exciting piece in the deal over Sutter and the 8th overall pick. I still wished we would have taken a forward... too stockpiled with D as it is. I notice we have to often sit guys as a result.

Good game. Zatkoff is really good btw. too bad we allowed the 3rd goal late in the game. Still a great game from him. Liking him over Thiessen quite a bit tbh.

I can definitely see Zatkoff here sooner rather than later. I'd like to see him in some NHL action.

Seems like Thiessen has fallen quite a bit. 35 wins in 46 starts and the numbers he had... sexy. But was he a product of a great system or a product of being solid with a great system?
