LaFontaine approached by investors to buy Islanders

Quote:
The New York Post reports that Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine has been contacted by European investors recently about of buying the New York Islanders and keeping the team in Nassau.

According to sources with The Post's Josh Kosman and Larry Brooks, LaFontaine - who began his NHL career with the Islanders after being drafted by the club in 1983 - is 'intrigued' and may look to put together a bid.

The paper adds that Islanders owner Charles Wang, who is seeking a new arena for the franchise and reportedly looking to sell it for the right price, could be asking at a $300 million price tag.

Forbes magazine valued the Islanders at $149 million last year.

I know he played 8 years there and the team that any player starts their career with usually holds sentimental value for them but, given all the shaky circumstances and events that happened since he left Long Island as a player, I'm surprised Pat still feels connected to the organization. I suppose his home and ties to the Long Island community make the possible challenge of buying and restoring pride to the Islander organization appealing on some level.

Although it doesn't seem he's willing at this point to move his family from Long Island, I hope he one day does find an opportunity to join the Sabres in some official role or job.

It would be cool if we could get a young LaFontaine back in a Sabres sweater for this upcoming season. He would solve our center problems nicely.

Exactly how does Lafontaine have $150M, let alone $300M?

Source close to Pat LaFontaine told me tonight that Pat is not involved with anyone in any way in an #Isles bid. @SBJSBD
