lets get away from the rank order stuff...

and move to the "pyramid" philosophy of ranking players. Here's Bill Simmons on the concept...

Bill Simmons, who I swear must be paid by the character, still likes to rank guys within the pyramid. That's what he did in the Book of Basketball.

That was my favorite part of the Book of Basketball. It'd sure be interesting to apply it to hockey

I think a pyramid approach would work well in hockey.

Aren't Trottier, Espo and Messier on the same level with a few others?

Is Lidstrom above or below Richard? F-it put them on the same level.

Makes things much easier.

This does nothing if you want to compare players who are close to equal. This only allows you to make obvious statements like "Malkin is clearly at a skill level higher than Jason Pominville"
