I just do not see Dion staying unless he changes his ways....I see trouble brewing between him and his coach...

Our future on the back end looks very bright.

Franson needs to play a lot this year and at the trade deadline we could turn him into a top forward prospect. Liles is/will be redundant and he can be traded at the deadline as well.
Gunnar could be traded in the 2013/2014 season if our prospects are ready and he could fetch us a pick and a prospect.

The guy ranked #1 in fitness testing, i will put money on the table that Ranger ends up on the leafs next year or the year after.
Or by game 1 of this upcoming NHL season.

Ranger will be a leaf this year, and likely a good one.

Gunnar - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Ranger
Liles - Franson

Agree on Ranger, but I don't think Franson will be a Leaf when the lockout is over.

not that i doubt his potential, but he'll have to go through waivers and i doubt he makes it. he likely spends the year with the marlies then signs an NHL contract next summer.

now, if there is a grace period of waiver free time after the cba is done and he has demonstrated enough skill maybe he gets up here

Wouldn't be surprised if he was traded, that's true.

So make it this instead:

Gardiner - Phaneuf
Rielly - Ranger
Liles - Gunnar

Just out of curiosity, why does he need to go through waivers? Isn't he technically a UFA?

I'm sorry but please, don't make any statements like this when you have no proof of any sort that Phaneuf would start trouble in the dressing room. Sheesh

Percy is better than most here give him credit for. He will be our future #3-4-5 type of guy.

Phaneuf - Rielly
Gardiner - Gunnarsson
Percy - Blacker

Finn/Holzer on the brink. Injuries and trades in the next 2-3 years will likely mean the bottom 5 is in constant motion. I like Finn to play a larger role because of his defensive abilities but I also prefer Percy and Blacker to him.

I believe that is if they are coming from Europe. It prevents someone from bringing in reinforecements when the European season is over/hiding a player over there for cap purposes.

Phaneuf plays the left side now. Carlyle wants him to get off his shot quicker.

Hey, if we finish 2nd last, and draft Seth Jones, we could end up rolling a d-corps like this next year:

Reilly-Dion
Gards-Jones
Liles/Holzer/Blacker etc.-Gunnar

No love for Holzer in this thread. Dude is Gunnarsson 2.0 and I think we could run something like this as soon as the lockouts over:

Phaneuf-Gunnar
Liles-Franson
Gardiner-Holzer

On top of that I think a lot of people are selling Liles short. Dude was unreal pre-concussion, he was on pace for a career year. He's not an ideal #3, but I think him and Franson would work well. Both have good outlet passes and Liles can skate it out as well.

All three of Gardiner, Rielly and Phaneuf shoot left, but they don't all play the left side. Gards and Rielly play left d, Phaneuf plays right d, probably because one timers are such a big part of his game. Down the road I can see Gardiner and Rielly as our top 2 LD, with Phaneuf as our top RD, that could be 3/4 of a very nice top 4. If anything Gardiner and Rielly are more similar, Phaneuf has a pretty different game from both (bigger, much more physical, more into one timers, while Rielly and Gardiner are both more finesse players and puck movers).

If anyone has to worry about his spot in the lineup when Rielly becomes NHL ready, it's Liles, not Phaneuf. It's my guess that Phaneuf, Rielly and Gardiner will be fixtures on our blueline for quite some time.

Rielly is a good two or more years away from making an impact, sorry but its far too soon to bring him into the equation. Gardiner is solid, I was impressed how he handled himself last year and his speed is something else, once he learns to play better defense I could see him anchoring a top unit with Phaneuf. I'm not sure how many years left Phaneuf has on his contract but I think it's safe to say his job is safe for a few more. years.
