I first thought that it was going to be a lottery for all non-playoffs. This would have been a bold move for the NHL and would have produced a marketable event.
with the double buy-out rule, if we're giving up little in return, we have all of this season and next to see if the experiment works. If not, cut him loose.
That is a lot of money to just cut lose for anyone. Katz might have deeper pocked than the previous ownership group in Edmonton, but after 2 seasons Luongo is still going to be owed 40 million dollars in real money. It is not realistic that he will be bought out of that contract I dont think.
Assuming no change in the odds, the last place team will only get the chance at the best player once every 4 years, which IMO is not ideal for the league to quickly improve the poor teams.
I wouldn't mind adjusting the odds to somewhere around 35%, which is close to the middle between the original odds of winning and the odds of retaining the 1st pick.
This buyout thing might actually help us. We have one player buyout, Horcoff.
Everyone else is not of consequence cap wise.
I wonder if teams have more than 2, we could help them out. Take Montreal for example. They have Bourque, Kaberle, Markov(?), Gomez.
Helping them out might land us something decent too. No need to waste the 2nd buyout on a guy like Khabi.
Aren't the buy-outs after this shortened season?
We buy out Horcoff, what if Belanger isn't up to it?
I want to say we'd be okay buying him out, but I'm not sure unless we have an immediate replacement ready.

I believe this is right, we have 2 buyouts that can be used at the end of one of the next two seasons I believe.

Belanger isn't up to what exactly? Horcoff doesn't do anything spectacularly. At best, he's an average defensive 3rd line C. I'm pretty sure Belanger will be fine.
Not only that, but if we can't replace an average at best 3rd line C, we might be in more trouble than we know. Belanger will be fine as this teams 3rd line C.

I know Horcoff has been debated to death on these forums... but what exactly needs to be replaced with Horcoff? Someone who can play against the tough competition and perform exceptionally poorly in the role? Anyone can do that.
If he bounces back and has a respectable season then I would maybe think about not buying him out. But if he continues to trend like he did last year then he shouldn't be getting that ice time regardless of how much he gets paid.

It's too bad that teams can't use their buyouts until the summer. I was hoping for a GM free-for-all before the season started.
Should add some depth to free agency over the summer at least, rather than "who's going to overpay that guy by 2-3 million just because he's the best on the market?"

Some posters have gotten used to the inept front office staff, do you think a team like Philly would have any issues buying out a 3rd line center and worrying if there'll be someone to replace him. Oiler fans deserve a better GM then Tambo, someone with some balls to get deals done.
A few months ago, Bob Stauffer was speculating that the Oilers will make a big move for a marquee player. Do you guys think anything will happen, or is Stauffer known to blow smoke?
