He said it was contingent on a lowered cap/buyout scenario. That wont take effect until after this season. So no.

A team only trying to hit the cap floor might want him as they won't actually have to pay him his cap hit. Regardless, in 2013-2014, he will no longer be an Oiler.

Stauffer knew that Jones was hurt but was waiting until the lockout was over to announce it.

Like I stated on the other thread, he has already said that deal is not likely to happen but a major deal will happen before the end of 2013.

I thought the 2 buy-outs were one per season for the next two years..As in, one after each season? No?

No, he revealed to a caller about a month and a half ago it was a goaltender. Nobody else seemed to notice so I posted it either in this thread of the WOW thread. Nobody seemed to notice that either as I got maybe 2 responses.

Well, 5'ish million a year cap hit for a franchise goalie isn't really that bad. Also, if they kept that provision where the team that signed the contract is on the hook for the remaining years after a player retires, it definately becomes more palatable for teams to aquire - driving up his value.

I don't think trades are planned 6 months in advance. Or make it 9 since he made the announcement a while ago.

Cheers, I really need to go to town on this new CBA.

Our goaltending situation leaves a lot to be desired, I think just about everyone can agree on that. My
only worry about acquiring a guy like Luongo is having 5 million in cap room locked up on a position that seems to be wondering towards a kicker-like situation in the NFL. A position where the norm is so good (most of the league avg. plus .915 save percentage) it drives down the desire for the elite and sort of devalues the position. There have been stop gaps in goal for teams that have made it deep into the playoffs. In fact the last couple of years Jonathan Quick has been just about the only elite goaltender that's really made a massive difference in the out come of playoff games.

NHL teams are gearing toward acceptable goaltenders for cheap (and I mean CHEAP) while solidifying their lineup and it seems to be working.

Do we really need a Roberto Luongo for 5 million a year when we have 2 potential all star prospects to sign and fill out a roster. Especially considering we'll only have about 40+ million to do that?

Since Stauffer hasn't said anything new about this "wow" move, I am merging it into the general proposal thread.

Did Stauffer say something about it being dependent on the season starting up in Dec? Or did I just imagine that?

Yeah he did. Last week he changed it to sometime in the next calendar year... complete shot in the dark. How many teams don't make a significant change in a calendar year?

Eddie Lack has been hurt and the Canucks do not need cap space this year. If a team wants Luongo now it might cost something of significance because right now I think the Canucks will want to keep both.

Once the season is done, unless he stands on his head Luongo will be had for cheap.

So if the WOW trade ever was Luongo, it is not on now.

Actually there are trades that take months if not years to actually come to fruition from the initial time they were discussed.

McKenzie also noted that the Edmonton Oilers were worth watching on the Luongo front.

I can't say I buy that, although I take most things Bob says quite seriously.

Luongo's contract runs until 2021-2022, but his salary drops radically in the last 4 years of his contract, which makes retirement, relegation to the minors or buy-out possible. Basically, its 6.7M for the next 6 years and 3.38 in 2018-2019. The rest is cap circumvention. Will 38-39 year old LUongo be worth 6.7M in salary and 5.33 in cap hit? Very doubtful, especially if Dubnyk continues to progress and Luongo takes a step back in the next 2-3 years.

Luongo sounds like he still prefers Florida.

Stauffer still thinks that we're not set in the goaltending position.
