Checkers Sign GT Dan Ellis to PTO

http://gocheckers.com/news/checkers/...rticle_id=1073

On Monday, the Checkers signed veteran NHL goaltender Dan Ellis to a professional tryout contract. Ellis, a 32-year-old with 165 games of NHL experience both as a starter and a backup, will be with the Checkers as they open training camp this Saturday at Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail.

The arrival of Ellis, who spent each of the last two seasons backing up Jonas Hiller with the Anaheim Ducks, will give the Checkers four goalies at camp. Two of those, Justin Peters and John Muse, are under NHL contracts with the Carolina Hurricanes, while another, rookie Rob Madore, signed an AHL deal with the Checkers this summer. Ellis is one of a slew of experienced players who have joined up with AHL teams since the beginning of the NHLís labor stoppage.

I'd assume this really a trial for the NHL backup spot?

Maybe Boucher is going to retire?

SUPER high quality backup if there is indeed a season. Especially since he's one of those guys that can step in and start for a stretch if Cam gets hurt. Basically everything we were looking for in Boucher, we just gotta hope he can stay healthy.

I like this if it actually turns into a contract. I could breathe easier knowing he's the NHL backup instead of PeteDawg.

I absolutely love this signing. He's exactly the preferred veteran goalie weve been looking for even before we signed Boucher.

This also puts the checkers over the top, further increasing our chances for that Calder cup championship

I've never liked Ellis much, and definitely don't see him as anything better than an average backup at the NHL level. As an AHL'er I'm not sure what he would be doing in the organization other than blocking Muse and eventually Murphy.

Wasn't it Dan Ellis that got his **** kicked in on twitter for making all kinds of dumb statements about how underpaid he was?

Which would make him the best backup we've had since the cup year.
