Trades you were dead wrong about-- for better or worse

What are the deals, when they happened, you went WTF was that GM thinking at the time or that GM just conned the other one, only to realize later you were dead wrong in your opinion

The big one for me was the Dwayne Roloson to the Oilers for a first round pick. I thought the oilers had screwed the pooch on it and got bent over the boards by the wild. Obviously a cup run later turned out I was dead wrong

what deals did you end up being wrong about after the dust settled. For better or worse

Kessel trade, most thought those picks would be between 10-20, but ended up being #2 and #7.

Hunwick for Cohen
O'Byrne for Bournival

I hated both at first but they ended up being pretty good for us.

I thought Ponikarovsky to the Pens was a great move. Turns out it really wasn't.

"There is no way Boston can ever recover from trading Joe Thornton."

Granted, they still got boned hard, but they recovered just fine.

Im pretty sure i called Thomas a stiff when we first got him. I realize i was just frustrated at the Bruins organization at the time.

I thought the Phaneuf deal was good for the Flames, but that was in a panicked, deluded state of denial.

When Carter was traded to Columbus...

I was not expecting Columbus to do as bad as they did. I was at least expecting a playoff push. What a mess that was.

As soon as I saw "Peter Forsberg to Nashville" I was convinced they were going to be playing for the Cup.

That it not only didn't happen, but was also followed directly by Balsillie's heavyhanded attempt to relocate the team, ended up being a large part of why I'm also a part-time Preds fan.

To be fair, none of us expected it either. I was concerned that we needed more and better blueliners first (and was this shy of going into hysterics when Brent Burns was traded a few days later), but figured that adding Wisniewski and Martinek would help. And, hey, another goal-scoring talent for defenses to worry about! It might not be perfect, but it could work!

Martinek was injured one game before Wisniewski returned from that utterly ridiculous suspension, and consequently they never played in a NHL game together for the Jackets. And we excised the name of the former #7.

I didn't know what to expect from the Beauchemin/Wright for Fedorov trade. I was pleasantly surprised at how well Beauch fit into Carlyle's system, and how immediate an impact he had. Was finally sold on him when this happened:

I thought that Winnipeg bent Anaheim over on the Selanne deal. I mean, Chad Kilger was an emerging power forward! And Oleg Tverdovsky was the Russian Bobby Orr!

One trade I am still pissed about is the Ryan Smyth for Robert Nilson, Ryan O'marra and a first rounder who turned into Plante. I thought the oilers made out like bandits. Thought Nilson would turn into a perfect 2nd line LW, Ryan O'Marra would turn into a 3rd line grinder and I always love first rounders.. this is a deal where at the end of the day no one won--IMO. Oilers bought out Nilson and traded O'Marra and most oiler fans have started to edge plante over to the bust pile

I'd say it took Dustin Penner easily a year and a stack of pancakes before people in LA didn't hate that trade.

I thought Penner was immediately going to destroy the league when he got traded to the Kings.

Not a trade, but I thought Michalek would be a great fit with the Pens. I still think he got a raw deal, but it obviously didn't work as I imagined.

Another was Thibault to the Pens for a pick. Thought he'd be a good temporary starter for when Fleury was ready and then fill into a mentoring role, but his hip had other plans.

Stempniak to Toronto for Coliaicovo and Steen. I thought that the GM made a huge mistake for giving away a scorer for what I thought were two first round busts. Turns out there was only one bust, and the guy who was considered the throw-in turned out to be the best player in the deal.

Thank you, Alex Steen!

i can remember a few however one which sticks out in my mind the most me being in winnipeg ...

2001/06/23 Toronto Maple Leafs traded Igor Korolev to the Chicago Blackhawks for a 3rd round selection (previously acquired - Nicolas Corbeil) in 2001.

with the winnipeg connection in chicago i was really excited to see zhamnov and korolev together again as they were great friends and linemates before with good chemistry.. and I predicted great things from the tandem..

i was wrong :-(

Really thought Kaberle would make an impact on the Bruins.
